Let's see your rare wrasses!!!!

Feminius, Lennardi, and a host of other "not so rares".

Since my first Lennardi, I have bought 3 more.. The 3 new additions are all feeding well now... Eating frozen mysis and brine. They have even started eating flakes and ocean nutrition pellets!
I also introduced 3 choati leopard wrasses which are also hard to get feeding.. 2 of them are eating like pigs and the 3Rd one slowly eating frozen stuff..

My secret is to out them into acclimation boxes in the dt for 24 hours at least.. During that time I offer them live brine shrimp... Which they should like eating. Then on the next might when lights are out I let them out of the box.

After the 2nd day, all the wrasses started to appear.. I feed them live brine for the next few days and then begin mixing it up with frozen.

This method works well on the most finicky wrasse and worked on my moorish idol as well!

I'll post some pics of my Lennardi and Choati schools soon!

Stethojulis balteata (Quoy & Gaimard 1824), the Belted Wrasse (3), is an Hawaiian endemic. This is the most common and hardiest member of the genus, but still has a dismal survival rate. A male and a female off of the Big Island. To six inches long.

Its day five. The Belted loves dried shrimp which I feed him from a feeding stick. He doesnt compete well for Frozen Mysis however. He's not shy he's just not as deliberate as the Lunare and Coral Beauty. He also keeps an interesting schedule. 9:00 PM every night he buries himself in the sand until morning.

You are keeping the belted wrasse with a T. lunare? This is not a recipie for success. My lunare is getting more aggressive & I plan to rehome him soon. They can be HIGHLY aggressive. He is likely to snatch all the food before the poor Belted even gets there! ( If mine is anything near typical of the species!).

Sincerely,
Matthew

Thought we'd share a couple of pics of our new boy in QT:

Did you buy your Red Velvets at the same time?
I have one in my tank now and would love to add another. Do you think there will be aggression towards the newer wrasse?

I did buy them at the same time, but I have had very few problems adding new fish (I have 80 fish/28 are wrasses) since using the 'acclimation box'.
I was offered a great deal on 3 more Red Velvets, and may just get them!

Red Head wrasse

My old photo service folded and my photos were lost but I was lucky enough to have Sanjay take some photos of my tank recently so I thought I would re post a photo of my male Red Head wrasse.

wow awesome thread and pictures, i am setting up a 120 gallon mixed reef and was wondering what you guys think is a safe number of wrasses i can have? i like having a lot of fish. thank you in advance and also i have fallen in love with the attenuatus flasher wrasse and i was wondering if anyone knew where i could find one besides keepin an eye out on dd, thank you in advance!

There are many of us that have been waiting for that fish, Brad's been teasing us with his for some time now.

38 Bill,

How long have you had the Red Head wrasse? I had one for 9 months seemingly in perfect health and then it went south very quickly and died within a few days of apparently developing a swim bladder problem.

I am more amazed by that earlei! Soon enough I will be getting my rarish wrasses. Hopefully I can pick up extra hours with the club frag swap coming up! Good looking wrasses in this thread, makes me dream a little. :)

I have had him for two years.
