Let's talk about Harlequin shrimp

Just read the whole thread. Very interesting. Any problems with blood shrimps or coral banded shrimp?

They're definitely interesting shrimp, for sure. I've never had any problems compatibility-wise with Blood (or Fire) shrimp. CBS's have the tendency to get quite aggressive, especially with other shrimp, so I wouldn't combine the two.

Have been reading throug this thread just for fun I dont have a harliqin or do I ever plan on having one but in reading I was wondering if you guys would ever be interested in buying these little stars that grow on the glass I think you call them Astrenias or something like that. I used to have tons in my 90. I now only have a 34 Solana so not that many anymore but if you were interested you should put a thread up in the want to buy section for people like me who never knew there was a market for them. I used to pull hundreds out of my 90 every week during water changes. I eventually started feeding them to the Anenome...and yes it ate them although not with the vigor it ate fish.

On a side note I now know why I cant get any coraline algea I didnt know they ate coraline.:worried:

I've seen them donated before, but IME when people ask for money for them it typically doesn't go over too well.

Yea I meant something like cover shipping not actually pay a price per star. Sorry if I sounded like I was trying to make a buck that wasnt my intention.

I just got 2 shrimps for my 150G about 4 days ago... are these guy very shy? The male is hiding in a tunnel (Thank god I can still see him tho =)) and the female disappeared inside my rock and havent seen her since I put her in.

And is it pretty hard for these guys to pair up? they weren't a pair when I got them, but I can tell it's a female / male

they pair up pretty easy unless the female is much larger than the male. also they are sky at first but should come out more over time

I have to agree on being shy. I have had my pair of hawaiian's now about 3 weeks and they don't come out much. I have been feeding them cc arms about every 4 days and they consume the entire arm in less than a day. I also have a serpent star and they don't touch it. I actually saw my male standing on the star and got scared but the star just moved and so did the harley. I hope they do warm up and come out more because they are kind of dissapointing at the moment but yes they are gorgeous. I also want a Melanurus wrasse but am concerned they will get consumed along with my cleaner and blood shrimp pairs!

They are especially shy when there is a lot of activity going on.. Mine didn't like it when my fish zoomed around the tank.

Man, this is making me want to setup another tank for them!

Hmm i see both the harleys eating now, but still havent paired up. I cut the legs off of the chocolate starfish and feed it to them.... Do I have to worry about those little ball from the starfish fouling up the tank? Or does something eat them..?

asking this cause I think it'd be kinda hard to remove it.... my shrimps dragged the leg and eating inside the rockwork

I hear alot of people recommend using chocolate chip star fish as a means of constant food. Keep a few, cut their legs off, starfish grows new leg. However, I haven't heard a time frame for which this occurs? Do they get new legs quickly?

Who has successfully performed this means of keeping food? Also, are your chocolates in a tank of their own or just the sump? Obviously they're not in the tank with the shrimp.

Hi and before I say anything I think this thread is crazy :) (in a good way). So I have thousands of these 1 centimeter wide starfish I have no idea what they are called so I can not tell if they have been talked about in this thread, will they eat them or not. The only description I can give is they are tan and have brown stripes on their under side. Thanks :)

I would say no they don't grow legs quickly! I think compared to other starfish they are fast but still not super fast. I have a pair of harlequins and they eat a whole leg in a day. I would have to think I would need almost 30 chocolate chips to be able to rotate by the time the first one grows it's leg back. I feed once a week by the way. I have heard of it being done but I don't have room for than many cc stars and I keep mine in my sump as cc stars will eat corals. Not reef safe at all! And not harlequin safe lol

As long as they are not brittle or serpent stars they will get consumed by harlequins if it's a starfish. Do they look anything like this? http://www.google.com/m/search?oe=U...i=-qVcTdCXJ5KOqAOcva7_Ag&ved=0CBIQ7AkwAA#i=14

So my guess would be asterina stars but hard to say without pics

You're feeding 1 leg once a week? Or 1 starfish per week?

^ Do you guys remove the remaining of the leg after the shrimp is done w/ it?

I think I got 2 harlequin shrimps... that hate starfish! Or just the nicest Harley ever

I have a Fromia Starfish in there... been 2 weeks and shrimps hasnt even touched it. I toss a whole chocolate starfish right in front of them.... The shrimp just walk away after a while.

I try feeding 1 leg, 1 of the shrimp grab it and ate for like a day then just abandon the leg... Is this normal???

Has anybody kept these shrimp with any larger tangs I really want a pair but want to make sure so they don't become a snack thanks

P.s great thread by the way awesome info
