Let's talk photography...

Think I bought some stuff from them. They dont have the threaded plumbing parts I need though. I think that tonight I will stop and pickup a couple of stainless and a couple nylon bolts, and drill them out and tap then to make an adapter to something common... I just hate taps and dies... I can never get perfect results. Thank you for the suggestion...

I don't blame you Mike. I was looking at Bills lenses, their all dinged up and the casings are slightly scratched. I treat my stuff with more care than that... but what happens when I get off the beat and path to get that shot..??

This is a lens rental online store http://www.rentglass.com/

I hear it works pretty nice if you want to rent a lens before blowing $500-$1500 on a lens you have never used before.

I want to rent this bad boy 400mm Lens

Also, my wife told me that a lady at her work rents SLR lenses somewhere in the Appleton area. I'll let you know when I know.

I thought Camera Corner in green bay rented them, but no. They will rent me a 350 Rebel though.

While I had rick on the phone, he did tell me he would sell me the 20D with the kit lens for 1499$... and that canon has not given an eta on the 30D.

I did not tell him I would not be buying from him.

Jason

apparently canon did give an ETA. My photography forums have some people claiming the 30D will be out next month already!

He wants to sell you the 20D for $1499? Thats a rip off, www.bhphotovideo.com has it, with the lens, for $ 1,189.95

I would love to support the local camera shops and all, but when they can't even come close to online prices, well I guess that's just too bad for them!

We do not have any estimated shipping date for this minor improvement of the 20d. I would have been more impressed had they made more mp and less than 1.6x conversion. Please call Canon at 800-828-4040 for more information.

Thank you,
Your B&H Team

Alius? at Canon says they are slated to be in store mid March. So your information is confirmed. I don't know if I'm gonna wait, the larger lcd screen and 5fps/3fps features are nice, along with the fasted wakeup/startup. I dont know about the third Stop steps ISO, a friend said that it was interesting, but don't know how important that really is.

Oh, and a print button on the back.... WOW... I'm proly not gonna use that.

What do you think?

The 1.6x crop factor is kinda nice for telephoto, but not so nice if you are going wide angle, because every focal length gets multiplied by 1.6. The nice thing about it is if you have a 300mm lens, its truly 480mm!

The larger LCD screen is nice, and the third steps of ISO are really nice. (Your friend must not be anal about getting the absolute most out of his images if he didn't think that was important!) The lower the ISO, the less noise you have in your image. There are so many times were I wish I could have had ISO 250 or 300 instead of ISO 400. The 20D has ISO 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, and 3200.

The most important aspect of the 30D, to me atleast, is that it utilizes something called spot metering. This is only found in Canon's top of the line cameras which range from $3000-$7000.

I would still get the 20D if I were you, but I wouldn't rush things yet. Watch the prices, as they should start falling very very soon. There's no sense in buying right now if you don't have to.

TJ,
That was me saying I didn't understand how important it was... I would if I owned a camera and was using it. She said it was interesting... I'm gonna wait a couple weeks but this is kiling me. I've had the card out more than once looking at it on the screen.

I also talked to Steve down at Camera Cornera this morning.. I checked into the rental of the camera - they have a 20D that rents for 75$ for the day, 112$ for the weekend, and 262 for a week. If you purchase from them, the rental $ is forgone, and they sell you the camera.

This was a bit steep for me. If it were 25-45$ I might have considered it. If I look at their retail price, and the rental cost, I am a whole lens ahead not to rent.

(fyi.. no need to reply on that)

I'm on several email lists, as soon as someone owants to sell one, I'll get an email. The money is burning a hole in my pocket though.

Sorry I havent been around much this last week, the whole family is taking turns being sick. I've been working on finishing my computer, I now have the water cooling system installed, sealed, and pumping coolant to the processor. The memory is installed, and with any luck, I will get to Radio Shack tomorrow for some switches.

Couple people suggested waiting a few weeks to listen for bugs....

and watch the $ on the 20D... I think you suggested that also TJ.

Been following along for awhile. I really want the Digital Rebel myself. I would also like to add that my 2 year old Canon Powershot A-70 3.2 megapixel takes great pictures. I am not sure that you have to spend a fortune on a camera to take really great shots. Here are some examples of the old camera no special lenses just the macro setting. I would like to be able to go really small and be able to take pictures of pods...that would be sweet.

Yes, those are some nice pics. I love the action shot of the horse, that's reallyl neat.

Today's point and shoots can take some great pics, here are some from my 5MP Sony V1. I use this as a backup when I don't want to risk taking my Canon for various reasons.

well I just took these pics at 6pm, through glass with a 75-300mm zoom at full zoom. These deer were all of 60 yards away, oh and yes I was holding the camera, no tripod. I can't believe how much light and color the camera pulled in because it was much darker out than it looks in the pics. Just wanted to show what a complete novice can do with a 350D.

Hey Mako.... Where'd you get your camera bag? I liked it when I saw it at the Meeting. I'm gonna need one by next weekend.

The betting pool is now closed... so who won?

I just orderd out my camera.

I finally settled on the 20D and Like we were talking at the Meeting. I got the camera for 650$ (body only) and then I got the 17-85mm IS lens your were using. I also slid over to another site and found that 70-300mm IS that TJ mentioned 3 pages ago. I saw some Macro shots by this lens and I'm gonna give it a whirl before investing in a Prime 100MM lens or something. I also like the 10-22 that TJ had, and may add one this summer.

I did go right to the 2Gig memory card though, couldn't see wasting time with a 1 G when for 40$ more I could double it. I did go with the San Disk card Tj recommended.

Thanks to all who participated in this thread. I hope it helped more than just me.

TJ, I was reading back and I still owe you a good lunch or something... if your still talking to me.... it seemed like you started to get the impression near the end that I was cutting your equiptment down... I'm just an over analyzer. I think your a pretty great guy for trying to explain all this to me... Alot of it stuck!

Deb (Jessica) and Mike, Thanks for trusting me in those few seconds I held your cameras. After I dropped the second cap in 3 minutes, I though Mike was going to snatch the camera back. I fumble when I get nervous. :D

And lastly, Nellie.... Whoa Nellie.... My final money tree will be ready for harvest in a few weeks, get your bushels ready.

Thank you from my Very warm heart.... Wait that's the heating pad.

Warm Regards and thank you for the help.

Jason....

Who needs a camera now?

Cool Jason, you will like it now when you figure out how to use it you can teach me. The wife got our bag at Best Buy I guess it was mine for Christmas. If I can ask where did you find it for that price and what did the 17-85 lens cost? Just trying to figure out how bad I got burned. But I am getting a $300.00 rebate that will take some of the burn out.

Jason,

Congrats on the purchase. Whoa, I never felt like you were cutting my equipment down. No worries. You are going to love your camera. Also, don't forget about www.rentglass.com where you can rent lenses and accessories on a weekly basis.

I have the Lowepro EX 160 Camera bag from best buy and I love it. Also, I highly recommend getting a backpack camera bag down the road. Mine can hold all 5 of my lenses as well as the camera. It makes it so much easier when you want to go hiking/biking/anything outdoorsy and want to bring your camera.

Where did you find the 20D for such a good price? They must really be pushing them now that the 30Ds are out. I almost bought a 30D this weekend but I just can't justify the upgrade yet.

I have some photoshop tutorials that will knock your socks off. PM me your address and I'll mail you a copy.

I ended up getting the 17-85 lens for about 460 plus ship. It was not the lowest priced site. I had actually found it ablut 30 $ cheaper on another site, but after I compared the shipping, all the combinations, I still saved an additional 65$ by ordering and shipping with the company I did.

BTW - I was wrong, it was 680

this came from CCI CAMERA I don't remember the site I'll look.

The 70-300 on the otherhand was a bit more work. CCI did not sell the 70-300 but the 75-300 is. Even though it was about 100$ or mor cheaper, I looked at the reviews, and found the one TJ recommended to be a FASTER lens. I did not want to waste the dough. So I ended up buying that one from GeniusCameras.com. I almost bought the whole shooting match from them, but that 65$ plus a bit mor came into play in the bottom line.

Both companies seem to be inflating their shipping cost. Standard ups with insurance was like 75$, While 2 day was 90 , and next day 100. So, it'll be here by thursday.

GeniusCamera was the one that I had the order placed with by noon. If I had ben able to get on the Fredmiranda review site it would have been a done deal. The were at 799$ + shipping. Now it's comming for 750 shipped next day. (with the 17-85)

Both sites have what looked like some great deals on the "glass" as you put it. Some sites are very vague as to the specs though, that was frustrating.

It really wasn't to hard to justify after they put the price of the 20D in the basement. Alot of companies like B&P and New Egg, and some of the others, must be sitting on stock, because their prices are not falling.

I'll pm you in the next few days, I'm feeling a bit under the weather yet. If I do it now, I'll fell like I should be looking at it and not resting.

STOP!STOP!STOP!STOP!STOP!STOP!STOP!STOP!STOP!STOP!STOP!STOP!STOP!STOP!STOP!STOP!STOP!STOP!STOP!STOP!

I just called CCI Camera. The guy who answered the phone would NOT identify himself. He was very rude. He tried to bait and switch me iinto the "USA" version of the camera that was to contain the parts in the box. He said the version online is the overseas version. when pressed for any information, he would hangup and state "DO NOT CALL AGAIN YOUR ORDER IS CANCELED" I tried to talk to him 3 times, however, he would not answer any questions. HE WAS speaking a programed responce. quoted the site and would not answer questions.

I have had to cancel my card to ensure no charges be made without my permission. I urge everyone NOT to do business with these people.

Jason

I take it you got my PM about these guys.

www.resellerratings.com its the only website to use to make sure you are dealing with legit people. The reason they had the 20D for such a low price was because they are scam artists. Always use reputible companies like Newegg.com and B&H for all your computer and photography needs.

I'm sorry to hear about this, and I'm sure you CC company will take care of you.

Bet you can't wait. The bag I got will only hold four lens and the camera. I don't feel to bad about mine then I paid 1465 shipped for the camera and the lens package. If the lens was 460 without shipping and I get 300 rebate for the camera it come out pretty close. Wow I just seen your last post BUMMER I did notice allot of that kind of stuff when I was doing my searches for the camera too, read it in the reviews of the stores. Probably some guy selling out of his basement. Guess the old saying is true if it sounds like to good of a deal then. That was a very good price. The 799 from Genius Camera is a pretty good price too if that's a American model. Now you have to decide all over again well good luck Jason.
