Let's talk photography...

Sigma makes very fine macro lenses. Did you mean the Sigma 105mm f2.8 EX Macro? That is a very nice lens. It has a somewhat slow focus though. The Canon 100mm Macro is awesome. You can rent lenses from www.rentglass.com dont forget. Im renting a 400mm L lens for an upcoming Brewer game (got seats 3 rows behind home plate!)

Awesome, Thank you. I looked at it breifly, but I am doing the conversion to the new computer, and need to canibalize the video card in this one... I'll look more later.

Thank you.

How's that computer coming by the way? I can't wait until May when I can begin building a new super computer! Won't be as sweet looking as yours though.

You know, looking back, I would NOT do it again.

My 300 and the computer have so much in common. For both projects, I have bought many of the supplies in advance, most were sitting on the shelf ready to go in. Here's the bad news. I started to add up what's really in the computer. It's not worth it. It looks cool, don't get me wrong... but the added extra expence of the water cooling, the lights, the lighted fans, the acrylic, the tube...

Yeah, it's running. I got the water cooling system up about 6-7 weeks ago, then it was just down to details... like the number of drives, and weather to just go to a terabyte or not...I had to order the second DVD writer when someone told me about the Lightscribe drives... now I can burn the label into the disc. I will probably post a pic or two...

I really HAD to get moving on it. My wife bought a digital camcorder in October that has a hard drive instead of cdrs or dvd or tape. The 20 gig drive is almost full. Not to mention the 20D I just bought, I am up to almost 500 megs of pictures and it's only been 3 weeks. With this amout of data to move, I'm glad I went to gigabit LAN, 4 gigs of memory and the terabyte of drive space. I kick myself because the 64bit machines were introduced while it was on the workbench, but I can proly live without it.

If it wernt for the 7 cooling fans, I'd say it was quiet and fast. But it's just fast. Now it just needs a copy of XP Pro....

Heres a pic I took last night. I thought it was kinda cool.

Nice zoom! Its a bit overexposed, so try setting a higher Shutter speed or a higher Fstop. What mode did you shoot in?

This is kind of a stupid picture, but it's related to the moon so here it is. I was trying to take a wide angle shot of the moon and surrounding clouds last night in my back yard. This is what I got. I converted it to black and white in photoshop. Kinda creepy huh?

Your pic looks like something out of a Tim Burton movie COOL. What settings would you recommend. I hope someday that I will understand what I am doing  . I am not sure what the settings or the mode was I used two different lenses and tried every mode out of forty pics there were three pics that turned out close to this one. I had some that came out with two moons with one of them blue that was kinda weird.

Mike, was that your 200mm lens?

Yep Jason that was the 70-200. Very cool computer a little more than I would want but I am thinkin that with the new camera I will be needing more hard drive soon not sure if I should go internal or external though.

If your doin external, do some research, I bought a couple external a few years ago that I was not very happy with. I keep them as a reminder. The have those hot swapable drive bays, those would be good. Put a 300 Gig drive in the bay, when it gets full, swap it with another, put the drives on a bookshelf.

I went with 2 @ 300 gig, one at 400 Gig, and a 80 gig system drive. I was thinking about adding another just for music, but we'll see after I buy all that stuff for the camera. I bought a Neoprene strap today, and I'm still looking at camera bags.

Hey TJ, I happened to be reading and searching a sight about lenses the other day, and noticed that everyone mentiones that they have always used a protective lens cover for their lenses. Are there the polarized covers, or is their a specific place/product that I should buy? (Or should these just always be polarized?)

Jason

Well Jason if I could pic your brain I won't have to do the research I am sure you did a lot of that. I don't have a problem going internal they are cheaper anyway. What drive would you recommend and where would you get it. Oh ya the next time I will be in Green Bay is Tuesday I work nights so I could drop your stuff off before I go to work it would be around 6:00 PM.

I'll talk to you tuesday... but if you want to use my 10 gig external, your welcome to it, I just don't truste it. There are better systems out there now. I bought into 3 different external systems that were supposed to be the best. All 3 failed me. I was and still am disappointed. The BEST way is to write a cd or better yet dvd. My new Lightscribe DVD burner only ran me 75 bones. With that, I can burn off my pictures onto a 4.7 gig dvd any time, when done, flip the burned disk over, and burn the label into the disc. you should check it out. I am setting the computer up, so it'll be a couple weeks before mine is running, but if you don't have a dvd burner yet, I'm sure you'll agree. You can buy a hard drive for like 100$ and store everything internal. OR you could go DVD and burn 2 copies, drop one in a safe deposit box with the rest of your valuables, the unused shelf life on a DVD is like 20-25 years. Using the same disk carfully is 5-8 years. If your hap-hazard and careless like I am with SOME discs, 2-3 years. But if it's importand, you burn 2 copies, and hide 1.

Split the money up, go with a 40-60 gig drive for some space, for about 50$ and then also add a DVD burner for 75$. Then you could still burn if you needed.

If you have one already.... all this is meaningless detritus. You can ignore my rantings. :D

Hey, camera question again. This is a worry, not a problem.

My 70mm-100mm IS lens has a lock on it, where, if you were to be done shooting and wish to lock the lens, you activate the lock. If you don't, and you carry the camera lens down, the lens will fall all the way out. I asume this is bad, since the instructions mention to avoid this.

My question is this, when done shooting, I always return the extended setion of the lens all the way back into the lens pior to caping the lens, and locking it. My worry is that the fine adjustment and focusing done by the camera leaves a short section exposed. the only way to return this bit inside the tube is to turn off the auto-focus and go manual, fix it, and re-engage the auto focus. My worry is that I will forget to do this, and this short section will get hammered or banged, and the lens will be damaged.

Any ideas? Is there a button to hold or push to return the lens to "station keeping" mode? or should I just not worry?

Jason

I posted your question and here are two responses I got

Response 1
I do the same thing when I am done shooting. Zoom in and lock, manual focus and spin it back in. I don't think there is a better way. Full time manual focus would have been nice on this lens but hey... can't have it all for that price.

Response 2
YES........after locking the ZOOM...put in manual focus..and run back to 'seated' position...THEN put back in autofocus...

I use this lens as a walkaround a lot....
I even lock it after shooting..
when I move to another shooting situation..
as soon as I got this lens I could see that I DIDNT want to put it away 'partially focused out. I am SURE it is not good for it to
ramble around in whatever case you put it in...with the focus not seated..

On a side note, I updated a few pictures on the favorites section of my website. Newest pictures are at the bottom.

I have my first every photoshoot this Saturday in Kewaunee. I have to photograph my wife's sister-in-law and her sisters, and then all of their kids. It's going to be crazy!

Thanks TJ, I also called canon... The guy on the Tech line was very helpful. He put me on hold while he went off and collected the appropriate lens and camera from his equiptment room. I walked him carefully thru the process...

His reply.....

"Yep, It does that...."

B+H's Reply.... "Huh.... no one ever asked before"

My 100mm Macro showed up yesterday. The chicks are gonna dig me now! :D

J

Oh yeah, I can't see not securing the lens fully after each use. Your right.
