Levamisole In-Tank Treatment for AEFW

I think it may help for people to expalin how bad their infestation was or is when they start the treatment. Also how agressive they were or are. I am thinking the treatment may be easier for people who have cut the numbers of worms down the best they can with dips and such rather than just treating a fully infested tank. (I understand not being able to dip is why your doing the treatment but some things probly can be pulled in most cases) I am following this thread and can't wait to see how it pans out.

I don't think it matters what level of infestation of these worms you have to treat your tank. They will be either eaten by your fish or your inverts once they fall off and twitch.

I can safely say that my display is AEFW free. I have checked many sps corals and they are all bite/egg free. I am going to do another dose just to be precautious.

Can't remember if it was mentioned but I have a buddy with red planira(spelling). Does the levi treat for them also?

My original record of my treatment "was" on my local club thread ... which recently crashed.... But, I can say that I am still AEFW free after many many weeks. I did see some eggs and some adults serveral weeks into treatment, so stay the course! I really have to dig back here in RC to figure out how long it has actually been since I stopped dosing.

I'll reiterate some key points:

Start at 5grm PROHIBIT/300gallon system water ratio;

Adjust up from there with each treatment no more than 0.5 grm per treatment;

Treat 5-6 times no closer than 5 days and no more than 7 days apart;

Each system is VERY DIFFERENT and will respond/react differently, SO OBSERVE YOUR SYSTEM!!!!; ...... AND!

Use the purest Levamisole product available to you with the most accurate weighing devise.

Good Luck!!!

Congratulations bax! I knew this day would come. Too bad I lost 90% of my acros beginning of the year. Im back with tons of frags and will be ready for these $#@& when they pop back up.

This is what I have done:

My total water volume is ~200 gallons. I have been following the recommended dose of 5g/300 gallons of water. I have been dosing about a week apart in the evening right around the time the lights go out. I leave it in over night and turn my GAC back on the next day. I also leave my skimmer on. So far I think it has benefited my tank, but I need to inspect a couple of corals that had the AEFW on them. On the second/third dose I add a little more than the recommended dose (~.3-4 grams extra).

With proper QT and the use of the Levi "IN" QT, we may be able to irradicate these bastages all together! :uzi:

I know I sound like a broken record regarding QT, but it the only thing that will work to truly control pests! :deadhorse:

+1 Bax - QT QT QT

Assume everyone (including your grandma who only buys coral on Sundays after church) has pests.

i got a tan ae flatworm out yesterday and put it in half gallon of water sprinkled some prohibit in the bucked i am sure it was more than the 5grams per 300gallons stired it up and let it sit overnight it has now ben 24 hours and the flat worm is still alive how is this working for you guys in 5-8 hours and are you sure it is aefw thats coming off and dying or just small planarias?

whats the longest any one has left this in there tank before turning on skimmer and carbon. and still didnt lose any tangs or fish. wondering if you could leave it in for 12-14 hours.

Although it is still embarassing to say, I'll say it again ...

I OD'd my tank with the fresh water dose the first dose I administered. That's 15 grms to 300 grams fresh water. Although some of my more sensative SPS took a hit, and my clams were NOT HAPPY!, and my brittle stars LESS HAPPY, every large animal including my blood shrimp, hermits & snails survived.

I'll also say this again ... DON'T DO THIS TO YOUR TANK!

Every tank varies so the leathal dose is a moving target. That's why we are recommending a slide upward of 0.5 grams per dose until you see the results you want.:fish1:

Sorry, bad news, after 4th dose of levamisole from Charles, new ROX GAC and water chsnge, polyps receded and almost all my sps were RTN, more than 80 different high end and LE pieces, also some chaices and other LPS doesn't look good.
Good luck to all of you!

whats the dose you used and how long did you let it go before stoping it? what about the first 3 times how did they react and was it the same dose?

I only left it in for about 4 hrs, then fired up skimmer, and gfo and carbon. Did second dose on sat, came home today to a nasty brownis tan algea bloom! Can hardly see coraline on my rocks. Did a 25g w/c the day of treatment, and 30g the next day.anyone have any ideas what to do next? Skimmer is pulling nasty tanish stuff out. Did 2.5g of prohibit on first dose and 3.0 g on second dose.

I am sorry to hear this. How bad was your system infested with AEFW. Is it possible that they flat worms had damaged the acros past to point of no return. Also, I think you were using some other brand of Levi besides prohibit. Do you think that your dosing could have been too strong?

So with the dosing outline of 5 grams of Levamisole per 300g, we did the math of:

1000 mg = 1g

Each pill has .0236g

I figured my water volume at about 75 gallons (I opted to go on the lower side, its probably a little more than that)

At 5 grams per 300 gallons
That's 5/300x75= 1.249 grams

1.249g/.0236g each pill = 52.9 pills it would take to treat my 75 gallon display.

So I crushed up 52 pills in a zip lock bag and dilluted it in about 2 cups of tank water. I shut off my carbon/GFO reactor and skimmer and proceeded to add in the levamisole slowly.

Within about 15 minutes I could see AEFW coming off a few montipora and my fish were gobbling them up.

After about 2 hours, I saw many dead bristleworms and pods, which is to be expected, this treatment may also kill star fish so be warned.

Around the 2 hour mark I also noticed my fish were starting to gasp. I am guessing the oxygen began getting depleted in the water. After about 4 hours I fired up the skimmer again, replaced my carbon with fresh and turned the reactor back on. I opted to do a small 6g water change to possbily alleviate some stress on my fish. By the next morning the fish were all ok and recovered, eating well.
so if my system is about 120gal then this would mean i would need 84.7 pills to treat my tank each time i treat the tank? which means i would need about 7 bottles at $23 a pop of the Vermisol to treat my system 4 times? about $175 total to treat the system? please let me know if i have the math correct. was hoping this would be cheaper but its well worth the money to save much more in acros!
