LF Macro Algae

Is anyone in the area keeping a macro algae tank? Not really talking about a ball of chaeto in your sump. Im in need of some "plants" for a project. Looking for caulerpa types, mermaids wineglass and gracilarias. Some of these are hard to find or don't ship well.

I've got a macro algae in my tank that you may be interested in. I've tentatively ID'd it as Flabellia petiolata, but I'm not 100% sure. I want to keep some of it, but I'll try to pull some off if you are interested.

Let me know if you want me to get a picture for you. On a related note, are you (or anyone else on RC) good at identifying algaes?

You still have the one from me? Grow it out. I have a tiny one plant left. That stuff did not like the move and after got chewed up by every pump in the system.

Thats an interesting one. I used to see algae like this show up on new live rock. How is it growing in your tank? If you plan to take some out, I suggest trying to do that with the rock its on. If its a huge rock, just break a chunk off.

I don't know if I am good with algae ID. But I like plants and try not to kill them. Not all algae is bad and should be killed. When I was studying marine plants this site came in very handy, take a look. http://www.algaebase.org/

It is growing pretty well in my tank. It's almost on the verge of too much though. I think my tang used to eat it (along with a lot of other stuff), because once he died, it started showing up.

i have no idea what kind i have. i can bring some along if you can use it great if not it needed to be harvested anyways

Does it grow well? Does it spread fast like caulerpa or just grow from one location? It looks hard, is it calcerous? Does anything eat it?

It can look different under various lighting and water conditions. The best color and growth I saw under slow, high nutrient, very blue t5 conditions. I have had huge bunches of this grow out from a single point on a rock. Few times had the whole bunch break off and end up in pumps. Can be very tricky to move it, or have a clipping take off in a new tank. Not really calcerous. Like caulerpa its slimy and squishy. From what I have seen sailfin, naso, bristletooth and foxfaces will eat it.
