Lfs in so cal

Darn I'm a little bummed that priced at vivid aren't that great, I was planning on making a trip all the way from south oc to buy a bunch of pieces to stock my newly setup nano. Probably still will.

Who has got the best prices for frags?

Rainbow Pet Shop in Arleta

Rainbow Pet Shop in Arleta

Don't know about prices, but I visited Rainbow Pet Shop in Arleta a few days ago and they had a nice selection of coral. If you are coming from the south on the 405 the store is a few miles north of the freeway at 9066 Woodman Ave.

A GPS might list the city as Los Angeles. Arleta is Jin the San Fernanado Valley.

I just stopped by Vivid yesterday and it's still a nice store. The sps selection, like chad_p said, are more like mini colonies but I thought the prices are reasonable.

Visuvius, if you're going to travel that far for Vivd, why don't you check out Reef Raft? It's closer and they'll probably give you a package deal if you buy multiple frag pieces.

Reef Raft on Garden Grove Blvd. and Hoover? Thanks for the suggestion I think I'll stop by on my way up to L.A.

I was at reef raft yesterday since i was in the area all day. Didnt see very many nice pieces, said they were getting a lot on tuesday and would be fully stocked by this weekend for the club meeting.
In general SPS can vary in prices, vivid and reef raft both have similar and reasonable prices, you'll get better prices if you buy more and speak up. my two favorite LFS for SPS.

Hey Everyone,

Will be heading back home for a week in Los Angeles, specifically North Hollywood in the San Fernando Valley.

What are the some great LFS to visit down there within the Valley and others worth the long travel? Researched the below...

SF Valley

Vivid in Canoga Park- been there and must see again.
Rainbow Pet Shop in Arleta/Van Nuys.
Scales N Tails in Burbank (mostly FW/SW fish)

Farther but worth the travel...

Reef Raft, Garden Grove?
Coral Gazers, Tustin ?
The Aquarium, Culver City?

Thank you.

Tropical Reef Fish Store, Rancho Cucamonga

Tropical Reef Fish Store, Rancho Cucamonga

Great selection of healthy coral and good prices, quite a few fish too.

Stopped by Fish Collections in Placentia the other day... Pretty good selection of frags and corals. I think it was 20% off on corals during the weekend.

Pasadena Tropical Fish : Steve the owner is very knowledgable and has helped me with several issues over the last year and a half as I've been learning the hobby. Every Sunday they have 25% off new delivery bags of corals, shrimp, fish, clams, etc. I like it because then the aniaml doesn't need to go through 2 acclimations and I save $. Just bought my new 55 gal upgrade tank from him and he gave me a killer price since I am a customer! Couldn't be happier.

Sadly the store Fish USA and Pets in Glendora is going out of business this month. This store is really small and only has 2 rows of SW tanks but Mark who has run this place forever is probably the nicest LFS owner I've ever known. This has been my local place for getting frozen foods for years.

Unfortunately this leaves me with no local store without having to drive 30+ miles round trip. Less than a mile away is Goldfish Plus but that place is disgustingly filthy and the owner is a total jerk to everyone. I refuse to give that place a penny.

I was looking for a closerr store so recently checked out reef raft. They have a nice store with a cool center display but the coral selection was full of all the normal stuff. Fish pricing was a little higher than what I was used to.

I went back to coral collection today and felt more at home. Picked up some $5 frozen foods and some nice frags!! Plus I like the deal they gave me when I asked for a deal.

Just went to they Aquarium World/Aquatic Depot store on Century on Tuesday and thought it was pretty good. Good selection of fish, and apparently they restock Wednesday so I went when they would have the least # of fish. Their coral selection wasn't very good, and a lot of repeats. Tons of liverock with craploads of visible copepods. They had one giant tub full of rock coated in coraline algae, and a couple full of big tonga branch.

Yeah coral collection is a really nice spot. Not a big store, but owners are cool, and prices are very reasonable.

I haven't been to reef raft in a while, but last time I was there most of the corals are fairly common. The stuff from Canada is nice, but I just might kill an acro so for $500 a frag I passed.

Anyone have info on any new stores in West LA or nearby?

Medusa seems to be getting rid of all their SW, not much is left.
Nature Aquarium on Santa Monica has only a few SW fish.
The Aquarium on Pico (across from McDonalds) is gone.
The store that was on Wilshire and Lincoln for 20 years is gone.
Allan's in the Marina has no SW that I remember.
FraggleReef has no site or updates for a year.

My favorites drives are Tongs and Vivid, but I have not been to either one in over 2 years since I'm stuck in the office everyday.

Isn't there anything even in Westwood? Any college area should have lots of stores.

Ocean Marine Sales in Glendora

Ocean Marine Sales in Glendora

I came across a new LFS in Glendora today called Ocean Marine Sales. The name sounds a bit commercial but this place is a true local and family owned shop. The two people who run this shop appear to have poured a lot of care into their place, very clean and nice looking tanks. They are still working on setting up some of the coral tanks so I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product. This place is located on Foothill in a semi-industrial area not too far from Citrus College.

The guy there made all of the steel stands and is also a cabinet maker. Both he and the lady working there (I forget their names already) were super friendly and eager to stock what customers are looking for. While the store is small it has an open clean look that I appreciated, especially after being in places that are cluttered. The fish they had all looked healthy and tanks were clean, another plus. I was tempted to buy a fish but I just don't have the room right now. The guy said they plan on expanding their coral selection very soon.

I really hope this place makes it. This area has been in dire need of a good LFS for a long time and the drives to OC or out to the SFV has grown old. If you are in this area be sure to check them out. I won't post their url (not sure if its allowed) but you can google their name.
