Why do octopus and squid have such short lifespans? As much as I love them I will not get an animal that will die within months to a year.

Another question what squid/octopus has the longest lifespan?

then don't get an octo because that is their lifespan and the longest span octo is probably the Giant Pacific Octo

after they breed an hormone is secreted that kills the octo a few weeks later.

I guess when you think about it is is smart because when the babies hatch there will be less competition between the adults and the babies there for more will survive.
