Light cycle

I was reading last night in another thread about this idea to black out your tank for a three day cycle, every few months. Anyone local have any experience doing this? I didnt read all 12 pages of posts or however many there was. Thought about trying it to see what happens, not sure if I like the idea much, maybe I'm wrong.

Yea I did it and it worked great for getting rid of my cyano. I did it for the full three days and one day of actinics.

I'll post my concerns about it later tonight.

I do it once a month it will help with your algae if you have a prob with it like i do and it will give your foxface time to get on top of eney hair algae to and over time it will put a stop to eney Bryopsis in your tank to. Your coral's will be ok with it

A lot more people use this method than I thought. Maybe I'll start one of these cycles tomorrow. I hear no lights for two days then just actinic, then normal. Has anyone tried day one just actinic, day two no lights, day three actinic, then back to normal cycle? I havent read of anyone doing it that way, don't know if it would be as benificial, I wouldnt think so, but just throwing it out there.

Look at the tropics, weather pretty much like we have been having the last week, nice and clear in the mornings then scattered T-storms in the pms. Rarely do you have total days of nothing but sunshine, there is usually some kind of shade in some place or another.

I notice with my corals when my PCs come on, the softies usually don't open all the way till the MH come on.

Yup, my halides dont come on on Thursdays. Unless someone is coming over. Simulates overcast. My actinics come on though.

The only problem I see with this is that people say your LPS will open more. Most see this as a sign of health but Anthony Calfo said in C the Jounal that isn't always a sign of health, and sometimes it is because of stress.
