Light intensity and PE - related?

This past week, I was able to get a PAR meter to check my lights out. It seemed they wer low and only giving me about 240 at the highest point on my rocks where most of my SPS corals were. So I turned them up (Reef Radiance LEDs) until I got an average of 330. But it seems now the PE is less than before. Could it be just an adjustment period or now that they have more light, they do need to feed as much? At night, the PE is still great, just the daytime has reduced.

It was more to get the PAR up on the sides of the rock for those SPS corals. It was really low for them and they were doing as well as the ones on the top. That is why I went up, but didn't want to go much over 300 as I have seen many tanks run at that level at the sandbed and mine is at the top, so it really isn't that high I don't think, but it allowed me to get a bit more light to the corals on the ends of the tank. I also put my filter socks back in line to help get some of the detritus cleaned up, maybe that has taken some of their food out of the water column. The PE is not a big concern as the corals still look great and really colors have gotten a bit better in the last few days, but just trying to see what might have caused the reduction.

Sorry.... But I will insist. Why you changed conditions (light, filter sockets) if your corals were happy before, with their polyps extended.

I do not care to replicate the pars of others or if they do this or that. Each tank is a different world. I read a lot and learn a lot from RC postings, but I only try to apply that when I see a problem and need a solution.

From what I read from your posting your problem are the changes you did to your system. Could be you changed the light too fast and now corals need time to adjust again. Could be the filter socks too. I do not use any mechanical filtration, but many with amazing tanks (10 times better than mine) use them.

Now, you can just wait and see if you get back your polyp extension in some weeks or go slowly back to your previous settings......slowly !!

Cheers
Daniel

Ps : in other words, from what you wrote ......." it was really low for them and they were doing as well as the ones on the top "........ You didn't have any issue
