Light position/Tank Temp

Came home after the meeing last night and my tank temp was 83.6. This is the new 120 with Sun Supply 2 250 watt halide and T5 bulbs. Room temp was 75 degrees. I have adjustable bracketts for the light hood. I moved it to the maximum distance above the water. About 10" from water to glass and another 2-3" to the halide bulbs. Is that still close enough to provide adequeat light and to help lower the tank temp. I was also thinking about getting a small fan to clip onto the tank and run when the halides are on.

Using 1 or 2 small fans to turn on when the halide turn on is a great idea especially if the lights are installed within a hood.

Also if even after using the fans and the tank still heat up then you will need to install a chiller and a dual temp controller. It will be one of your best investment since it will keep your tanks temp constant in the summer or winter time.

Does your tank have glass tops? Are there glass covers over your light fixture? If you do have glass over the fixture, you may want to go open top.

I'll definately try the fans.I have a feeling I'm going to need to invest in a chiller. The Metal hood has glass panels on it and its not in a canopy. That sounds like a good Idea to remove the glass panels to let air flow.

Yep! I think your right Mike "GO Big Or Stay Home" I actually do have a Calcium reactor and RO/DI. I even just bought the new Tunze 6055's with the multi controlle,their really nice pumps! I definately should go with a chiller. What's the consensus on what chiller to go with? I think I would do something similar to Tom and Jeff's setup of remoting the chiller on my back porch about two feet behind the tank,there's even a house vent postioned perfectly in the wall behind the tank. The only bummer is i would have to make a hole in the hard wood floor(bummer) unless I can figure something else out.

Thysoft, the best thing to do is get one of the Delta starr 1/3 horse inline chiller without the controller and then get the Aqua JR to controll it that way you can controll the temp plus pumps and lighting too.

Hey Bob, depending on your stand setup we might be able to make the holes for your lines in the wall rather than the floor. we'll have to come by some time and check it out.
