Yep, 6 bulb for both. I preferred my 250w de halide +t5, But both work fine. I have the 36" on top of a 60g currently. The 24" has retired to sitting in a cabinet lol.

Are you running Phoenix halides? I'm running radiums on a M80 ballast + T5 absolutely love them!

I honestly don't remember as it's been years since the 40g was up. I have a 700g now haha. De 250w Phoenix sound right tho. I know it wasn't radiums. I have radiums now. Here is the pic of the 40g

I have a 60" fixture over a 72" tank and its plenty of light.

I think you could go either way (24" or 36" fixture) and still be successful.
