Lighting for a 24x22x22 Refugium?

Refugium is in full effect!

Here's a pic of the ball of chaeto donated from a local reefer this past Sunday.

Lol, that's funny.. the pic I'm including is what you should be looking forward to in a week or two.. This is what I pulled out of the system two days ago for my lfs guy.. This is the 4th harvest of this size.. Lol, so be ready for harvesting every week a good amount...

I don't know if I have the nutrients for that kind of growth, especially since i just did a rebuild, but we'll see!
 
I don't have much nutrient either to be honest(at least that's what the tests read), but it's so much light thrown at it. This stuff had always grown crazy like that under these HID lights for me, while the display tank stays clear. It's the craziest thing to be honest..
 
Update!

I think this HPS grow light is working. :lol:

And here it is ELEVEN days later.
It has opened up quite a bit from the gentle suspended rotation, but it has definitely grown.
And my nitrates are <1.

I've never had cheato grow before. No more home depot cfl setups for me! ;)

Now to figure out how to get some measurable nitrate in my tank so my sps will color up!

Ha ha! If I had the space, just for "cool points", I'd make mine spin also! I'm sure it looks sweet!

And told you dude! Power(doesn't seem like it, but there's a massive difference with these lights and growing that cheato)! Lol! And yeah I do! Video, video!

I'm faced with the same.. I thought I read seachem flourish works. I'm trying at this point to just trickle my pellet reactor and wait and see. I just did that today..

What? Your nitrates dropped on you? Lol!
 
I built a new sump today(excited because it's the first sump i have built) and it should go online tomorrow. I increased the fire area massively, so I'm thinking and hoping i should see great things. It was 7*13 and now it is 17*12. So we will see how the growth proceeds and it's end results.

I am going to transfer my whole cheato mat to the new sump. I have plenty of room to experiment, so i will see what my mind leads me to..

Lol, you might in the end of its anything like mine..

Just as something to think about, i got my new sump up and running today(pic attached), and unraveled my mat of cheato a little bit. It was very dense in my previous 7*12 space. In the picture, with it unraveled some, it's a good start to my new 18*12 space(actually measured it today) . I was actually suprised how packed tight it was in the old fuge area. It's still tight in spots, as i didnt want to disturb it too much.

But it fills it out nicely..

My ball is the size of a beach ball now.
Will do another video soon! Probably will be taking up the whole cube, barely able to move. :D
 
Wow! I get almost that kinda growth with my cfl, I wonder what would happen if I put that hps on there...hmmm I do have a 250w de halide I could throw over it and see what happens....I figure something like this maybe

The only thing with the higher voltage lights is the heat possibly. But, it probably would do very well depending on the kelvin of the bulb. I am not sure of the kelvin of standard mh de aquarium bulbs, but, i think and seem to recall for the mogul bulbs, it was around 5 to 6 k kelvin. The growth wouldn't be quite as stretched add day with a sodium, but it would produce a nice tight ball also..

The main advantage with sodium is the lumen/footcandles per watt. For the same exact wattage, sodium lights always put out more lumens than halides.. So you can go with smaller, less energy sucking and cooler fixtures..

So tell me, are you enjoying this also? I find it very interesting and enjoyable. I also am beginning to heavily think about life in "the green tank".. Have you thought or began giving any thought to what animals would grow good in our cheato sub fauna?

I was thinking adult brine on top of the copepods i already have, and then find a way to add some ampipods..

But that ball is awesome! Sort of like the world's largest ball of string.. Lol! Great work!
 
Lol! That thing looks like a planet 🌍 or a moon with its rotation.. Ha ha

How large is it in diameter now?
