lighting for nems

Right now I have a 65 watt PC 50/50 light. I will be upgrading lights soon, and want to grow nems.What is the best light for a nem? Would a purple condy nem be okay in the tank for a month or 2 until I upgrade the lights? Also, dose anyone know anything about the curly cues? Are the condys agressive? Will they hurt my corals? Oh the tank is 29 gallons.
 
that would be a bonus, I dont think the condys are hosts though. I was thinking of using it as a base for a herd of sexy shrimps. Are their any host nems for te clowns that could live in this tank?
 
Looks like your 29 is still cycling, and that's about the smallest tank I'd put a nem in.
You should wait at least 6 mo for a nem, and should have good light to start with.
BTA's are on the lower light spectrum.
 
Yeah, I have to fix the sig. done cycling. I have a shroom and snails in there and both seem to be doing well.

so a bta would be good? Well I will be getting the light before 6 months so the nem will have a good light to start with.
 
you should wait at least 6 months before adding an anemone, nothing to do with the lighting they just need a mature tank
 
I would make sure you get a better light before you get the nem. As far as the 6 month rule goes you can do it or not. All the literature I have read to include the PDF here on reef central suggest to wait only a month after your cycle is finished. I really can't find where this 6 month thing took over. I put a small nem in my tank. It started off about 3 inches, grew to 10, and now 2.5 months later it split. I really don't think the split was stress related as all parameters are exactly the way they should be. I would suggest a really good skimmer to help keep the water quality up. I feed mine every 2 or 3 days and that means that the nem releases a lot of waste every two or three days lol. The waste can quickly lower the water quality you will want but the skimmer will help you out with that. Don't just take peoples word, go look up what is published to help make your decision :)

Is Bob Fenner's "Published" word enough that you need to wait six months minimum before adding an anemone?

If thats not good enough, search the last years posts here, and see what some anemones look like that were added too soon. Too many anemones die because people don't wait.

Three inches to ten inches in 2 1/2 months and it split? I'm not surprised.
 
I agree, this is a hobby that is best not to rush.
That usually results with a negative outcome.
This hobby is alot more fun when you're not killin' stuff!

What light should the bta, condy, and curly cue nems be under? Keep in mind tank is 18" deep.
 
I would think t5ho's would be more than enough for most nem's especially if you tank is only 18" deep. Just make sure yo uget individual reflectors for the t5's they make a huge difference.
 
not to say it was right or not but I have my ritteri and RBTA in my tnak at 2 months after the cycle and they are doing extremly well and they like light all of them moved from the bottom ends of the 180 from the 250mh's to the very top of the center where the 400mh are so I guess they wanted more light....
 
The nems you mentioned are normally good w/ lower light output.
T-5's would be fine, or 150w halide.
I'd probably go w/ T-5's
 
At 96w for a 29 you're about min light rec(roughly 3x, 3-5 is a general rule)
Most likely OK.
Individual reflectors would be a good call to push more light.
Half actinic, half 10k or 14k would be my choice.
 
I use 2 X 150 MH and 4 t-5s. If I were to spend 800 bucks on a new light again I would probably just get t-5s. A guy in our club has a 600 gallon tank and only uses t-5s. He has nems on the bottom of his tank that are doing just fine with the t-5s. My other main reason for t-5s is the fact that heat is not nearly such a prob. I have to run a small fan under my lights to keep my water temp stable when the MH lights kick on. This really causes a lot of evaporation from the heat and air blowing over it. Oh, my BTAs (I have two since it just split) prefer to be lower in the tank. They are actually only a couple inches off the sand. With that said if you run 150s that will be plenty of light for them. Have you found a nem you want?
