Lighting period question

Currently I run dual 250 20k with 48" actinics for 6 hrs. My parameters are all optimal and due to a grossly overdue rodi filter change I am battling hair algae. Dealing with it the old fashion way ...good husbandry and a great toothbrush. My question is this.. I feel as though I am cheating my tank out of good light and want to expand my periods. How can I gradually and effectively bring it up and what is the general concensus of how much is too much. I ask this in advanced because I am also looking towards the after affects of my chemistry and additives. All of this while being carefull to not turn my tank into a forest.
Im asking this in advanced because I am looking at this from all angles not just lighting.

the aquarium really does not need more light....assuming your bulbs are of recent age, and your tank is not 30in tall, i would say leave it with the 6 hour period. I personally have 2 250's and 1 400 on my 180gal.

I run my 250 watts for a total of 6 hours
and the 400 watt for about 4 hours
