lighting timers

I need to buy a new timer, what would be my best option ? The timer will need to be reliable and be able to handle 2 400 watt M/H safely. Thanks for the help.

check out lowes or home depot. I have a belkin digital timer that was made for home theater type use. it has 4 timed plugs and 4 regular. I use it for a 250w MH, fan and a powerhead that turns on with the light. I think it should be fine. I think I through the box out so I cant read you the rating on it.

Thanks for the info I am kind of old school even though I am only 36 years old. I have been using the old $7 home depot mechanical timers with the green and red pins for 10 years. I have tried digital timers and hate them because they are not cut and dry. All I want is to set the timer to come on at x time and shut off a x time everyday of the week. The basic timers have worked well for me many of years I just think I am pushing my luck running 800 watts through a cheap timmer. I plan on going on vacation for thanksgiving and X-mas so I want something easy to use that can handle the wattage. I do not mind spending the 100.00 for the RKL but I do not need or really want the extra functions.

How many watts do you run through one unit ? Does the unit get hott ?

Yeah, that's the only thing I wondered too. I have used one for 2 250W Halides over 6 months with no problems. It was never hot to the touch.

I have set up 4 APC Timer Power Strips I got at Fry's electronics for $15 each, they are 6 outlets, 5 on the timer, 1 on all the time. I use one for my blue lights, one for daylight, another for Moonlight LED/Sump light, and the last with the timer disabled for pumps/water flow. All of them plug into a GFCI protected strip. They hand nice on the inside of the stand so they are out of the way and make managing the cords easy.

I use a digital timer that fits into a standard house outlet box. You hardwire it to either a plug or directly to your light wiring. It will hold up to the 15 amp limit of most houshold circuits.

More info please, Brand or link/picture. This sounds like what I am looking for.


I was using a coralife non digital powerstrip timer but it gave out, I switched it out for my old trusty 7$ HD timers but when I have two pluged into a powerstrip controlled by one cheap timer it gets very hot. Maybe I just need better power strips with individual timers and a heavy gauge extention cord ?
Any ideas ??

I have no idea what the brand is. I went to Home Depot, strolled to the aisle with lighting timers/extension cords, and picked the finest cheapest two-outlet grounded timer. It doesn't get hot on me.
