Lights... hit me...

To close this off... I've ordered 2 x evergrow IT5012 units... £900 delivered. I'll likely add another 2 to run side by side in the future... not bad for all in £1800.

Just hope they live up to the reviews...

I would go for the GHL Mitras 6200hd.
It's on sale since they have a new model out

Right... still £850 each and I'd need 3... I've ordered the evergrow IT5012 units already in any case.

I think the vast majority of advancements will happen in LED. This is basically chip technology, its going to do nothing but advance in engineering and value. I see very limited tech breakthru's for t5 an mH.

Kessil alone claims $30million in R & D research and development into LED.

$30 million? Where did you see that?

Its on their website:

"...dense matrix platform that carries 21 LED chips in a circle smaller than a dime! This patented design is the result of over 30 million dollars in investments and five years of diligent research by DiCon. Its team of Ph.D's found a way to fundamentally resolve the thermal issue and invented a metal carrier that dissipates heat away from the core quickly."

30 million investment including manufacturing, sales and advertising etc, it is not just R&D.
If they need $30 million to come up with a led light like this, the team and the management should be fired.

"This patented design is the result of over 30 million dollars in investments and five years of diligent research by DiCon." -You asked where I got the $30m figure and I showed you. I don't see anything about sales and advertising there. Where did you get that info? They said "this patented design is the result of over $30 million in investments.. ". If you know more about how they breakout their development costs pls provide your source.

lol...why should they be fired? They have a very successful product line. Its an innovative American company that makes very good lights that sell very well.

Edit: Why the hate-on for Kessil?

That $30m would be for everything... Kessil say it '$30m investment', if it were only on R&D they'd say so... they want to put the biggest number out that can legitimately, so that would include everything.

However, it's a heck of a lot more than I've invested in LED, so fair play to them. Agree they are good lights that offer something different and they have a die hard following as well as more casual users... they tie everything into one package and it works quite nicely. You rarely see kessil owners moaning that they bought the wrong lights... the American swing on manufacturing etc helps with the marketing in their home country (which from my point of view, being in the UK just means 'imported').

Kessils are great... I don't have one, I don't really like them, but I have nothing against them...

Same for me being in Canada. Kessil seems to operate similarly to Apple, which has found a very successful way to operate in today's global market. Do the R & D, patents and design in the US...and have very limited/no direct investment in the actual manufacturing of the product.

You read my post wrong.
The $30 million is for everything, which is normal. Especially they develop kessil for a much larger market other than the tiny marine hobby market.

Kessil is made by Dicon fiber optic, a Taiwan company. Kessil is just part of their product lines. They do R&D as well as manufacturing and marketing.

For matter of fact, Kessil manufacture their led in house (Taiwan) and they also claimed that they are the only company that did that on their website. Please note that kessil is a brand name, not an independent company. Kessil is a brand owned by Dicon.

lol...DiCon is NOT a Taiwanese company. Its 100% American. Like Apple. They do their own designs and engineering in the US. The products are made in Taiwan, but everything else is done here.

DiCOn is as American as Apple Corp is.
Both companies operate that way.

"DiCon Fiberoptics, Inc. designs, manufactures, and markets optical components, integrated modules, and test equipment. The company’s products include optical switches, attenuators, tunable optical filters, optical channel monitors, filters/splitters/detectors, and rack mount systems. It serves optical communications, defense/military, aerospace, industrial manufacturing, biomedical, test and measurement, and fiber optic sensing industries. The company was founded in 1986 and is headquartered in Richmond, California.

Reef lighting is only a small part of what they do. They have taken their patents, innovation, research and technology in optics and lighting and applied them successfully into our little hobby. And they are American.

And you say they all should be fired? lol

They are not Taiwanese. They have a Taiwan subsidiary, Global Fiberoptics Inc.
DiCon are headquartered in California, not Taiwan.

But lets fire them all. lol

edit: find any of your growth pics to share with us all yet?

Lights... hit me...

I have seen how you twisted other people's words in another thread and made it really fun to read.
So I will no longer respond to you as I don't think you are truly interested in a useful discussion. It has been nice to discuss with you.
But otherwise your are very entertaining.
