I can get some quarry limestone is it safe for use as base rock in a reef system would save some money if useable ? stubby

I would think no. Limestone breaks down with salt water. I went to Indiana University in Bloomington, IN and every building was made out of limestone. They would never use salt in the winter, because it would damage the buildings. It was not awesome.

I am no expert, but I wouldn't roll the dice on it, personally.

IIRC limestone is primarily calcium carbonate, but it may have other minerals in it too, depending on where it was quarried.
