Lion Fish Question!!!

Evyllchyld

Trying again
My dad was interesting in getting a lionfish for his 75g tank, its not a reef tank, pretty much a fish tank (lol) with a decent amount of room for fish to swim around. he only has one angel in there so far for fish and hes being real choosy. I'd like to see a lion in there and so would he. Niether him nor I like the fuzzy dwarf lions. I was just wondering if you guys think if he got a lion if when it was fully grown the tank size would be large enough for one of them. All input would be great!

A Volitan Lion, as an adult, would not be ok for a 76gal. tank.

My 15" Volitan was in a 200gal. tank and it still looked too small.

People say that they're ok in smaller tanks (90 or less) cause "they dont move much" but mine swam all the time. Probably the reason they dont swim much in 75gal - 90gal. tanks is because there's not anywhere for them to go.

At the least it would need to be the ONLY fish in there due to small space. Many would still argue with that, but def. not with any other fish or much live rock either so get the water change buckets ready!

The author of the above article has his own forum if you'd like to talk to him directly.

I'll PM you and I'll tell you where it's at.

A bunch of people who used to be on Reef Central went to this same board, so I don't want to post it in an open forum. There still might be some open sores.

If anyone else wants to know PM me.

I was looking at the dwarf zebra, i really liked it but i couldn't find anywhere that sold them or had really good pics. anyone have a clue where to get my hands on one???

Call around to your LFS they may be able to get one for you, I like that lion also.

Here is my Zebra, they are beautiful little lions:

Very nice lions, i like the zebra a lot, but for some reason i can't get myself to like fuzzy ones, even though that is probably the best one i've seen. I'll call my LFS and see what they can do. Thanks for the suggestions!

I agree about the Dendrochirus zebra (zebra dwarf). I have one in my 55 and he looks just like the volitan, only smaller :D

Here's mine:

This would be good reading for Dad.

Someone with a PhD says a 75 is ok...

I'd take the advice of a new fish store employee, that had little experiance, before I'd take the advice of Marini.

His PhD. doesnt mean a thing to me...what I do know, from witnessing it myself, is that he's untruthful and takes credit for other peoples work. But, then again...this thread isnt about him.

your right.
The thread is about keeping a new lionfish, not about me.

A 75 gal is the minimum tank size I'd suggest for a P Volitans, as i wrote and you don't have to read. These fish get 15" in size, and a 75gal 18" width would allow him to barely turn around. Bigger would obviously be better, but don't take my word for it,ask someone else. Thanks for your opinion

I have a question regarding the size measurements of the fish itself. Are these measurements including all the fins extended or the main body itself. Our little one will slick his back when he's hanging out on the underside of a rock and sometimes just because.

no the measurement is called standard length.
Is from the tip of its nose to the end of its caudal penduncle. No fin measurements

I personally love my antennata! He resides in my 55gal, and I have had him for about 8 months, I think they max at about 8-", and mine is about 6 " now.. I got him at around 4" . He has a voracious appetite, and begs like the best of them! I find them more attractive than the fuzzys, more colorful that the zebras, and more hardy than the radiatas and smaller than the volitans! All around I give a thumbs up!
