lionfish + mantis

I think the Puffer and Boxfish have beaks and will make short work of your mantis. The lionfish may have the ability to swallow the mantis whole... not sure, I'd be more worried about the mantis than the other fish.

it's a 7'' peacock mantis. i was hoping they would tolerate one another due to size similiarities.

The puffer will try to eat him... the box fish may also, and puffers can get really big! You may be okay, butI'm thinking not

If the Peacock swacks the boxfish you may have a toxic aquarium on your hands. I don't think the boxfish do this too often but I have heard of them killing off tanks when they get shocked or die.

sounds like Russian Roulette...I keep a fish in my 6" peacocks tank, but its a nice clownfish that doesnt try to eat the mantis...thus there are few problems... Lion probably be okay, but no sure about those nosey inquisitive puffers (what species?) , I have heard of Boxfish killing off whole tanks so that that could be bad...
But I have heard of crazier things like a mantis and an octopus living together!...so who knows.. I would test the mentality of your mantis to see how aggressive he or she is to fish (I used a little damsel and there was no aggression, then tried the clown and they have been living together happily for over a year)

Quoted from Dr. Roy's page...

" Cohabitants: Most aquarium animals are not safe with large O. scyllarus..."

While 7" is probably a bit of an overstimation (Dr. Roy has stated that most folks include eyestalks and telson, which he does not when measuring the animals...), a good 5-6" is more likely, which is a BIG mantis.

A mantis that size is more than capable of killing the fish.
