Little ninja has locked himself in his room

yes, i named my mantis little ninja.

I have had him two days, he has taken into homing into a nice rock i placed in there full of holes for him to choose from, he decided the hole facing towards the door would be best to spy on my actions.

He demands me to bow to his almighty prescence when i approach by outstretching his arms.

Thankfully he has taken to target feeding really quickly, learning the syringe holds bountiful amounts of mysis for him to eat.

I am concerned though as he has suddenly decided to lock himself in his room, building a door to his room. I beleive its an attempt to prevent me trying to discover his world domination plans. I can hear him chucking tantrums. I am worried he wont come out again. Will he beable to open his new door to his room?

if it helps he is a g. smithii.

thanks!

the little guy is molting, mine is 2.5 maybe a little smaller and he only locks up for a week, and they do lock their homes up at night with shells and pebbles

I can only speak from my experience, which is limited to 11 mantis shrimp thus far...

I have found that in almost all of the cases, my mantis have secured themselves and gone into a molt within a week or so of arriving at my place. This is most likely due to the fact that they sit around in sumps, display tanks at LFS, wherever, unable to get any privacy or security for Neptune knows how long. Many are probably a little overdue for the process, once they finally get to their new little sanctuary.
One of my P. cilata went into a molt the day after I brought him home, for instance.

He will be able to get out just fine, do NOT try and dig him out from worry or anything like that. I did it once, and, while I didn't do any harm to my G. platysoma, Dr. Roy said that it was a very bad thing to do, stressing the animal.

your right , i shouldnt have worried. I woke up this morning and looked over towards his tank, lo and behold little ninja was staring straight back at me as if saying "took your time getting up".

He is now watching my moves carefully as I type, sneaky thing he is.
