Live BlackWorms: Best Fish and LPS Food Ever?

I've done it before...the worms would wriggle like crazy. Not sure it was good for them? Besides, they are fatty enough. I'm not sure why they would need enriching?

I don't bother with the Selcon, but I'm feeding the worms strictly vegetation. Some red & purple TLF algae, nori, spinach, and the occassional apple wedge. I figure I would plump them up with the foods I can get only a few clowns to eat. I'm not too certain on feeding only wood pulp.

There are pictures on here somewhere but there are a lot of pages to go through. Maybe you can go to this thread and search for black worms

Anyway it is basically a 4X4" PVC fence post sliced in half and about 3' long but it could be any length. It is slightly tilted about 1/2" higher on one side. The high end has an end plate glued in. The lower end is over a small tank that has smapp powerhead suspended in it. The pump supplies water from the tank to the high part of the trough where it pours into a small container of carbon. In the trough are a few low barriers that slow the worms from going into the tank. There are also a few rings of plastic window screen in there to help heep the worms in there. The worms that do fo into the tank first fall into a container in the tank so it is easier to suck the worms back up and deposit them in my reef or put them back into the trough. I feed them pieces of paper towels. The thing needs a couple of weeks to cycle and in the beginning you will have to change the water every day and maybe twice a day. After that it keeps itself clean and I change the water every week or so. Don't wash the tank or trough. I also have some eggcrate in the small tank for additional bacterial growth.
Let me know if you need more info.

Paul I am interested in building a worm holder could you send me some specs.
Thanks

Taken from Paul's prototype: Although I don't do pictures, I will provide a description. I took a 5 gallon aquarium which is used as a sump. It has a hang on the back filter (which I seeded with bacteria that I also use in my pond; remember worms are fresh water creatures). I took a 3 foot by 12 inch by 3 inch metal tray, put up dividers about 9 inches apart that are 1/2 inch high. Each area is covered in egg crate. Water is pumped from the sump up to the left hand side of the tray by an aqualifter pump (slow is critical). The tray has a slight (1/8 inch) elevation from left to right so the water is gravity fed to the right hand chamber where there are two drains so the water can return to the sump. Water change in the sump is once per week (50%); I keep carbon in the sump. Feed the worms with 2 inch square sections cut from brown paper bags. I order a pound of worms about once every three weeks.

Two questions: why does everyone feed paper towels/paper bags? I quess I see that like feeding my clowns Adult BS that have ate nothing to enhance their nutritional value. Just my pondering if I'm throwing my exotci sea veggies in the trash of getting some added benfit.....

.......1 lb every three weeks?......:eek1:

I haven't bought any since they crashed when I moved to MI. That was 7 months ago. I bought a 2oz souffle cup worth and they seemed to have only diminshed by 1/4 of what they were. I feed 4 pairs of clowns 2-4 worms each about every 3-4 days. Are you feeding an Army or are you an upcoming episode of animal hoarders?:fun4:

They don't eat the paper but subsist on the products of decomposition like bacteria. I also throw in there a few flakes but they grow and re produce on paper.

As PaulB already answered this . . .

Well my colony of worms is somewhat self sustaining but not enough so I don't have to replenish them. You are feeding 8 fish every 3-4 days whereas I am feeding closer to fifty fish every day for about 10 worms each. Perhaps you might notice a different level of consumption? And, of course, worms is only one feeding out of four per day.

Very cool thread, thanks to everyone for sharing their opinions and experiences. I placed an order today. I'll add these guys to my arsenal of foods.
I am trying to get several pairs into breeding mode. I'll share my thoughts on them after I've been using them for awhile.
