live fish, UNDER my store

As some of you know, I own 2 Subway fanchises. I am in the process of remodeling one of my stores. Today the contractor cut the concrete to install the plumbing. Now most one story buildings in the state of Florida are built on a concrete slab that rest on dirt.

Usualy you have to cut the concrete then pry it up from the ground. When these guys finished the first cut, the concrete fell down into a 4 foot hole with about 18inches of water in it. Of course the water splashing up, and the concrete falling away scared the hell out of them. At first they thought it was a sink hole. But upon closer inspection we determined it was a like a crawl space and the floor was post tensioned concrete. The entire shopping center is basicly hollow underneath. We stick a flashlight down there and find to our amazement, FISH swimming around. The store is located in a shopping center just like any other one you see around town. There is nothing to make you think there is a small lake under the whole thing. I don't know how they are alive. No light, no steady food supply. How the O2 gets in?

I didn't test it, but I'm going to assume its not salt water.

Though you might find it funny.

Wow. I saw a show a while ago about underground spings in fl. There was like 15 miles of gorgeous springs under houses and roads and other things. Open up the whole wider and dump a couple of buckets and salt down there. Then some barracudas

Perfect - you need a glass floor!

So the contractor cut into a post tensioned floor slab? That could be a problem! I hope you have an engineer involved.

The contractor quit cutting of course. Now we are waiting on the engineer. From looking at it, 2 of the tension cables were cut 15 years ago when the store was first put in. No new cables were cut today. I don't think I will have too much of a problem. But we will see what the engineer says.

you have got to post some pics of thie entire deal!! I m guessing that the water comes from underground streams that lead to larger bodies of water!?!?

I like the glass floor idea myself Joe...certainly would be something different:) Sounds wild! I'd love to know the source. This would be a great local news story...have the papers gotten ahold of it yet? Could be some great advertising...and certainly would be on the top of my story page if I were still writing/editing. Looking forward to the pics. Marcye

I saw this show too. I think it was on the PBS station. I think its called the wekiva springs basin. There was one guy above ground, and another guy in full dive gear swimming. The guy above ground followed the other guy for miles with some high tech equipment. It was a pretty neat show.

That is pretty amazing. Is this the store in Tampa?

Mr Neutron, did you get a motorcycle? Is Jonathan starting a gang?

I haerd a story of a guy who bought a pleco once, and then decided he didn't want to take care of it. Small one, only a few inches, so he left it in a tank outside and the tank completely filled with algae. The tank froze during the winter months with a sheet of ice on top. Next season, he looks at the tank and sees a pleco as big as the tank still alive and well. Couldn't move much, though. They released it as they should have originally. All worked out in the end, even though that fish had to have gone to hell and back to get there.
