my live rock arrived today and upon putting it in my curing tank i noticed its loaded with mantis shrimp bummer eh? out of the 70 lbs i have i can only use 10 of em cause they came from a seperate supplier. anybody have live/base rock they wanna sell?

I'm sure there's at least one person (Cruella) that would be interested in a mantis. Or you could always sell them or trade them with a local store.

So why is it you can only use 10lbs of your LR? Because the other 60 are loaded with mantis? There are several techniques to getting rid of them. Try doing a search in the Stomatopod forum.

im under the impression that mantis shrimp are a bad thing to have. the first 10 lbs are from a freind who had some he didnt want and the rest came from a freind who gets it direct somehow, uncured.

lots of mantis huh? I guess they do get it direct and uncured, what other kinds of hitchhikers did you find ???

can you get this uncured rock often??

Just to make sure we are on the same page, you have "loads" of guys similar to this in the liverock?

Are you familiar with amphipods? Don't want to confuse the two.

the shrimp are similar inly mine are a pale green color. yes i can get as much as i want,a freind comes from trinidad and his brother is a diver/fisherman. and i told him that id take whatever he could get me. 10 days later a box is waiting 4 me. i gave $3.50 a lb including shipping. the other hitch hikers so far are crabs, sea stars(only 2 so far both died) sponges, what i think is brain coral, clams, snails thats about it.3 weeks im supposed to get another box but id better get good at killing mantis shrimp by then.

 WHY do you have to kill the mantis shrimp? It has already been posted that there are people, including myself, who will take the shrimp if you don't want them. I have had one for over a year and think that it's an awsome pet. Before you decide to KILL anything see if there is anyone here who might give it a good home. If you have mantis shrimp you don't want, please pm me, I'll come by tomorrow and get it/them.

i had no idea people really wanted em, i thought they where a pest that killed fish and inverts.ill setup a 10 gallon tank and seperate em for you all and let u know when i got em all.

DO NOT put them all together in 1 tank.....they will kill each other. If you can divide the tank into little section, that will work.

Tracey,

Maybe you could do a group order on some rock ???

I'll be setting up a 90 gallon in the next month or so and I am going to be needing some more rock, at least 50lbs...

I'm not sure if you can or not but if you can I'd be willing !!!

Tracey, if you cure that rock properly, it will be very nice rock and still have a lot of life on it. don't just put it in a container and let teh amonia go through the roof on it. try to do as nuch "dead picking" as possible and then cure the rock with a good amount of fresh clean saltwater as possible.

I used to buy direct rock all the time. If you want help determining what will live and what should be picked off, drop me a line.

im currently using a plastic trashcan (new) and a large sweater box, i have a powerhead in each and i have a skimmer that im rotatin from one vat into the other every day, i have a freind is gonna loan me a skimmer but not till monday. ive also been rotating the ones on the bottom to the top when i change out the skimmer and i also have been chaing water at this time too. the smell isnt too awful yet.the shrimp turned out to be saron marmoratus and they are nasty little suckers. all this work to cure the rock makes the price of cured seem like a bargain. i just hope this load is cured b4 the next arrives. also i may need some help sorting the dead life from the good.

krazy k as far as the 50lbs you need maybe the next load can go 2 u and you can cure it youreself. i think its gonna be about the same as this load in size. just make sure you dont open the boxes indoors p u:eek1:

I think I killed everything living when i had the 45 gal and treated it with copper, then when i got the 150 gal i added 100 more lbs of dry rock from ReeferRocks.com (great place by the way!) so i would definately love some live rock to re-seed my aquarium! i mean if you can get it for free you could make a little profit selling it to us! let us know what u think tracey!

might as well be free less than $4 a lb shipped (i think it worked out to be approx $3.55 a lb. i think we can get that tank seeded with no problem

Frankie,
If you happened to have treated with copper in your reef tank (aka with the LR) then you're in for trouble. Copper will absorb into the LR and leach out with time, killing almost every invert/coral in the tank. Assuming they don't die immediately. So adding additional rock to that system will ultimately "contaminate" that rock too. Chances are you won't be able to keep anything other than fish in that tank.

I apologize in advance if my assumption if off base.

Do you know if your brothers friend is licensed to collect/harvest rock and coral from the reefs? There is still a lot of poaching of the earths coral reefs by people looking to make money. If you don't know, may I suggest that you find out before having any more sent to you. I am all for saving a buck or two but not if the rock is harvested in ways that are not "reef friendly" I am not trying to insinuate that you or your friend and his brother are, or would knowingly, be involved in poaching the reef, I am only asking out of concern for the reefs.
