Hello all, I will be traveling about 2 hours in the near future to buy a tank. I was wondering if i could get the live rock (in the same city) and keep it in a bucket of salt water until my tank is ready for it, so i dont have to make another trip. How long would the rock be able to stay alive before the good bacteria start dieing? Thanks.

Pretty long. Some of this LR comes from the other side of the world. You can put them in the bucket of salt water but its a hassle. I have done in the pass, is wrap it with wet newspaper or some kind of paper with moist in salt water and put it on a big trash bag. Just makes sure you put them in cooler or somewhere where the newspaper doesn't dry out. Good luck, you should be fine... mahalo

Sorry I ment until the tank is ready. Was wanting to make my own water, ect. Might take a week or two. Should have been more specific. Thanks though.

As long as you have the water moving it will be fine. I store and cure rock in rubbermaid tubs. Just throw a powerhead in there. If the rock is not cured a small skimmer would really help. You do not need lights on the rock while you store it.

Just keep the water at temp and circulating and you will have no issues. No difference than if it was in your tank. LR does not need light.

my rock was siting in trahcans with water for over two years while we rebuilt our house and I got the tank all set up. all I did was water changes to the rocks every month. Tank has been up and runing since oct. never realy had a cycle to speek of. not like some people speek of.

i would think if you were to provide the rock with a container with circulating water at proper salinity and temperature you could maintain it for quite some time. i'd want to be testing and changing water in the container regularly but as long as i did that i'd feel fine about keeping the rock that way for the couple weeks it would take to get the tank up.
