Live rock turning color?

My tank has been up and running for about 2 weeks now, the live rock is turning almost a brown tanish color, would this be diatom bloom? I don't see any color change in the sand, what would you say?

Thanks

It could be diatoms, dinoflagellates, or cyanobacteria, and most likely is a mixture. Such blooms are normal, in any case.

I'm sorry, but I don't agree. You paid a lot of money for those rocks. you want as much to survive as possible on them. Allowing the rocks to become engulfed by what ever it is will only cause more life to die on your rocks. I don't think its Diatoms or any form of algae. Its on your rocks and not your sand. Sounds to me like your rocks are not "cured" despite what your LFS told you. What is on your rocks is the bacteria laden slime from the life forms in and on your rocks dieing. Clean as much of this poison off the rocks as you can. If you just let it go you will end up with rocks that are good for nitrifaction and not much more. Not to mention the smell in your house. Man them rocks stink! Good luck.

no i have the same thing ( my tank has only been up for two weeeks also) and i was talking to the lfs guy i kno very well and he said it regular algae it isnt bad he said wait till it turns a little bit greener and put sum snail or hermit crabs in there to clean it but it is fine dotn worry about it

It is natural to get algae blooms durring the cycling process but this is not what CYEATER described. He described rocks going through the curing process. These are two very different situations. If it was algae it would be growing everywhere. The sand, the glass, and the rocks. His problem is just on his new rocks. The life forms in and on them are decomposing. CYeater, you don't have to take my word for it. Just lift one of the rocks out of the water and inhale. If i am correct the rock will stink to high heaven.

I had this problem almost two months ago (brown on LR and LS). Just wait and everything will be fine!

Got the same problem as well. My 65g LR tank is an Ecosystem and recently added a phosphate reactor to cut down on phosphates. Diatoms on the live sand and some on the LR, not excessive but it's there. Can't figure out why, especially with the PhosBan. I use the best TDS free top off water I can get, decanteur the frozen food and don't over feed... yet there it is.

End of the day, it's not unusual and will not harm the tank. We can all add clean up crews but that doesn't cure the problem...if there is a problem. Nature does what it wants:)

Most likely diatoms if you are in week 2. Very normal for newly cycling tanks to go though a diatom bloom followed by a green hair algae bloom. They will pass on their own. No worries. Keep using RO/DI water if you aren't already. ;)
