when it comes to rock per gallon are we in general talking about actual weight or surface area? For instance one rock 5lb. very dense and another 5lb. rock not as dense with alot more surface area. Would the less dense w/more surface area throw off the 1-1.5lb per gallon??

the 1.5 to 2 pounds per gallon is more of a guide, porous rock is best overal, get away with less weight this way as well.

I think it's all about surface area. Most of the good rock comes from Fiji and similar areas-and 1 to 1.5 pounds per gallon is often used. The rocks are porous and relatively light for their size. If you go with a dense Atlantic type rock, you might have to go 2-2.5 lbs per gallon

Surface area is what is important. You can tell by looking whether you have enough or not. Weight is irrelevant, that is just how you are charged for it.

My tank, for instance, is arches and caves, but the top of the rocks is within about 8 inches of the surface ranging down to about 12. I have no idea the poundage, but there's a good base for setting corals. And the amount is important, because it's part of your 'filtration.'
