"Live sand" in the bag...

Live or not so live? No constant air would probably cause the beneficial bacteria to die. Am I onto something or nah? Just need enough for my 50 cube but don't want to drop in something that will be packed with nitrates, nitrites or ammonia.

Thoughts?

I think they are live as long as it's still wet inside.. not too sure, but there's an expiration date though.

I bought live sand on my first tank because the LFS sold them to me.. since then, I've been using dry sand. no differences..

I think live sand actually needs to be rinsed more because of all the white stuff inside..

I mean, I usually set up tanks with BIO-Spira in the past. Always with great success using about 1.5 the amount recommended. That seems to set the tank straigh and avoids the cycle completely but using wet sand in a bag just seems a little risky since I usually never use anything wet (Dead rock and dead sand and I add nitrifying bacteria myself) to avoid hitchhiker's.

I've started every tank with Dr Tims and dry rocks. dry sand/ wet sand.. both had a small cycle of 2 weeks.. no ammonia, some nitrite and then nitrate

I gotta stop by your pad dude and see everything that you've done. Looks like you are in over your head with tanks now :headwally: I told you it's super addicting. I had to step away for a long time. If my gf didn't catch this octopus I would have never come back till I could afford my 3,500g dream tank. Since she wanted to keep the Octo she is the one paying for the entire reef haha... I couldn't have had it any better. Hope she never reads this

Tropic Eden Reefflakes Aragonite Sand - 30lb

I've been hoarding reef stuff... spare chiller, pumps, rocks, skimmer, lights... everything! lol..
