Liveaquaria - Divers Den Group Buy Idea

Hope everyone had a great Christmas!

I have an idea that I want to run by you guys. Divers Den has had some impressive maricultured SPS colonies for sale anywhere from $69-$129. I have been eyeing them for the last couple of months, but I have never pulled the trigger.

My thought was to get a group buy with 5 guys/gals, or more if interested, to each throw in $110 (the average price for 1 colony). Once the money has been collected, we can take a vote on what everyone would be interested in, ie Acros, Stylos, Montis, and which colors you prefer. Once we have established this, then I/we can keep an eye on the Maricultured SPS coming in, and try and scoop up 5 or 6 size colonies. The colonies come and go so quickly in this section, that's why we would need to move quickly once we find some that we want. I could possibly email Divers Den, tell them our plan, and perhaps they could give me a heads up when they are about to post some new goodies. Once this is done, we can choose someone to frag the colonies into relatively equal size frags for each person involved.

It sounds a bit complicated, but in my head, its quite simple lol.

Five people x $110 (includes shipping) = $550 to spend on as many colonies as we can get. Shipping is $40, so that makes is $510 to spend.

Colonies range from $69-$129 depending, which means possibly ordering more than 5 colonies for $510.

Now for you lineage and named coral snobs out there :lol: , these are maricultured colonies, so they are fresh from the sea. I have seen some very impressive stuff on here though, so names dont really matter to me.

PM me or just post here if you would be interested or if you have any suggestions on how we could simplify this. I think this would be pretty cool if we could pull it off.

Still need to get with you for the zoas and palys. Had major issue with about 6 fish dying over holidays so I have been waiting to see what happens with the tank. Everything is going well.

I have been interested in buying from live aquaria but i would just like to buy some things for my self. Dont know if we get group buys with them or not. I do not have much as far as coral goes thats why I would like to buy some larger stuff for my tank.

You know you can get on the divers den preview list that comes out around 1-2pm that shows you what should be posted that night.

Jared- I think most of us have just been so busy with the holidays, shoveling snow, etc. and with the economy we are waiting to get stuff at frag swaps, from local people, etc. - For $110 you can get a lot of great corals at the Ohio and PA frag swaps. I think the first one in Ohio is in April. NOT to mention some local refers around here that have very good corals they will sell for cheaper than Live Aquaria. This way you also see the corals with your own eyes - without the possibility of picture enhancements, etc. - Just my 2 Cents.

Fragging mariculture (wild-collected) pieces tends to add stress to an already difficult transition, resulting in some cases in permanent color loss. This is why I wasn't as interested. They do have very nice pieces, and I've thought several times about getting them, but it would be to add to my tank as a whole, and not frag for several months to a year.

I know the local reefers and their prices, and I know you would be hard pressed to find a frag this size for $20 from a local reefer, even the more generous ones. Based on the size of the colonies in the pics, each frag would be a multi-branched 3-4 inch frag.

I respect your opinion however.
