Living Sea

gotta agree on the Ocean Design props. Ive found Tony to be a great guy. They are my fav LFS for west chicago. Good fish prices and selection as well as coral.

They have consistently been improving their store and invert setups over the last year or so (since Ive started going there.) They have a variety or sizes of coral which helps out us Nanoreefers and the stuff is aways priced what it should be.

Anyone out there get along with Mike and Jan from Living Sea.I have to give them credit, their store is clean and well organized, but they seem real arrogant when it comes to real good help and other questions unless you are buying something.

I started this hobby a few years back with Mike and Jan. I went in there store and was totally impressed. I bought a 180 gal Tank, stand, lights, skimmer, the works.Than mike said for $180 They would bring it to my house and fully set it up. Well when it was set up I was told I owed a mileage fee and a plumbing parts fee of over $300. Mike and his set up man left and I went to check out my new set up. I found several leaks that were running like streams. I called and told mike and he came back out the next night. He smeared some blue stuff on all the leaks restarted everything and said it will be fine now. Mike left and within about ten min his fix blew and I had several leaks again. I called and was told the next morning by his install guy that I lived to far from the store and I should try to fix the leaks myself. I did fix them and have never spent a dime in that store since. That set up cost me at least twice what it would have at Rod's Reef where I now shop.

Pioneer, :(

I'm sorry for your experience with them. After hearing so much, I'm glad I didn't have them do my setup.

I'm glad you found Rod! I've also found him to be most helpful.

Just out of curiosity, are there any other stores that have "eye candy" like living sea? I look to look around there, but rarely have interest in buying anything. However, i did get a huge hermit crab from them that I am extremely happy with.

Hard to buy something that looks like it's sick or dying, or both.
Lot's of places that have better stock, none of them are as big as LS but size doesn't..............................

I think Ocean Design has way better coral sellection than any local store I've been to (including Living Sea). Prices are reasonable too!

Everytime I read a thread about living sea, i get confused why everyone thinks its so great.

Been in there 3 times and everytime the stuff in the tanks looks half dead, and the coral selection is sad.

There are so many other better stores than LS I just dont get why alot of people are infatuated with this one store, am I missing something? :)

RSWretler - what are you looking for - fish, inverts, dry goods, sps or softies and lps? there are lots of great places but no one place seems to be great for all things

where is it going to be - I had never been to their old place but would like to check out the new one

I don't know the address, will get it, but it's on Dundee rd. South side, between Arlington Hts. and Buffalo Grove rd. I've seen the store in progress and it's really going to be nice, the show tank has been running for a while and is amaizing already.

cool - I have been trying to explore more of the outlying stores lately - used to go to just the city area stores (used to live in town) but recently have been to oceans floor and sharkys reef and found both to be great - still have yet to make it to rods and sho tank but they are on my list and now I'll have to add sea schor:)

When you go to Sea Schor, you might also want to stop by Coral Paradise on NW Highway in Arlington Heights. Jim Roberts has a nice store and really reasonable prices. :)

It's really great to be in the NW burbs! So may great places, but so little dollars to go around! :D

I like the look of living sea but if you look behind the scenes, it's not all that. They don't have as good fish quality either as old orchard does. the people staffed there are not as helpfull either, if I wanted help like that I would get my fish at fish supplies plus. In slatwater area, nichole is good and very nice.

what about in the city??? I go to Old Town on Wells, and it is beautiful, but expensive. Also, Aquatic World though not flashy, it is clean and everything I have bought from them has been REALLY healthy, and they have helped me with several set-ups. Sean, is moving in another few months to a new location, so he will be having a big sale soon. He just had his eight year anniversary sale and everything was HALF off, I got some great stuff. Problem is, he doesn't have much in the way of corals. Any store ideas for in the city, or near the north side of the city?
