living with aefw

Anyone living in harmony with aefw and still having nice sps growth and color?
Anyone have an acro colony with acro crabs and still have aefw?

I haven't seen to many people that have nice sps with AEFWs. They actually bite the coral, so I'm not sure how long the coral will live. I have seen a few people on here that seem to keep their corals for a whill but eventually they will die.

I am livin' with them. I had them pretty bad about a year and a half ago but I started to baste on a weekly basis and I only see them now on a rare occasion. I didn't remove corals and rip the tank apart to treat...just basted.

Do you notice any of your acros that they never touch, such as torts?

I have seen them on some my torts or but not any stags. They seem to like the millies.

Thanks. That is a Green Bali Slimer. As for red bugs, Interceptor sounds like the right idea.

ReefBum, I would like to hear more about your basting experience.
Do you still baste?
Yep. Once a week. I don't baste all my corals like my birdsnests, stylos and stags since I have never found them there. They seem to like the smoother ones and the millies.

Thank you for the reply. I wonder if there are different types? The ones I had never touched torts (cali, oregon) but loved milles, tricolors, and stags like insignis, but not formosa...

The weird thing for me is that I have never really seen the stags stressed out when I found the AEFW.

There may be different species of aefw. I know for sure that they will invest every type of acropora. They do like millies the best, though. It does not matter what type you have because they will eventually get aefw.

I have a similar experience to reefbum. I am actually trying to eradicate them by using a maxi-jet 1200.

It is easy to keep them in check. Even when they were not in check I saw almost not visible damage aside from a few bite marks.

Basting can blow enough off but a maxi-jet is needed to get them all off. They hold on very tight (they need the acropora to survive so they really do not want to let go). In other words, basting may give a false impression of aefw populations. After basting for some time I began using the maxi-jet (at point-blank I might add) and many aefw flew off. I thought I had them under control!

So far my experiment is going well. I maxi-jet every other day or every day if I can.

I had them very bad when I had them...

But even while surrounded by corals in this condition, certain acros were completely untouched...

One thing I do want to point out is that I lost a few acros (back when I first started basting) when I basted too hard. My advice is to be careful not to stress the coral out more by applying too much flow.

Did any of you who had aefw notice that they would not attack colonies with an acro crab in them?

Corals are not dieing like crazy in the wild from massive aefw populations so there must be something killing the aefw?

I too noticed this. However, I also noticed that it would only happen in areas where the AEFW were actually present. So maybe the tissue in that area is weak/damaged, and comes off easier during basting? Just a thought I had....

I find it strange that you folks experience this when using a turkey baster. I am pushing the tip of a maxi-jet 1200 against the flesh (touching in some cases) of my acropora without tissue loss. I would say this puts out a lot more force than basting.

I have them in my tank, but they really only **** off my milles. I really just can't keep milles in my tank, they loose polyps extension and color after a couple weeks in my tank and its a pity because they're one of my favorites! Has basting helped your milles? I ordered some stuff to dip and quarantine all of my acros, but if this works i may just go with the basting.

Using the maxi-jet has worked like a charm. Every fish in my tank is now trained to eat aefw.

Also, look for where they lay eggs. This is easiest at night. I have found they will lay eggs in the same place over and over again.

I have not tried an MJ1200, so I can't say anything for comparison. Perhaps the method of basting/blasting was not the issue?
