Lobster tank FOR CHEAP!!

When I lived in Okinawa it was illegal to remove anything from the ocean, even naturally broken frags.... Interesting law when I saw dozens of new Japanese divers STANDING on and destroying acro heads. Hundreds of inadvertent frags sinking to the bottom to their deaths and I can't even take one home to save it? Some laws are just plain stupid and definitely need revision.

So the 15 coldwater reef hobbyists/collectors who exist in the U.S. today do more environmental damage than boat pollution, oil spills, industrial waste, etc....?

If I had a lobster tank, I would fill it. Period.

You can get a license to do it, it is just cost prohibitive for a recreational hobbyiest. I looked into it and it was about $650 after all was said and done. You can take inverts, but to keep them you still need all the same light and filter needs as a tropical reef and IMO the cold water can't compete in color, if I'm going to spend that kind of money I want tropical.

The laws are there because too many people abuse them. If you could take a frag that was naturally broken what is to stop someone from breaking a coral and then just saying it was a natural break. If everyone did this the oceans would be in worse shape then it is now.

I agree that the laws need to be changed (for instance in FL it is legal for a hotel to restore the beach which kills acres and acres of reef with silt then after the first storm resilts the reef with the erosion, but I can't take a coral for my tank), but until then you should not knowingly disreguard them as if more people did we will just end up with more laws that prohibit our hobby.

It is also hypocritical for us to say we will disreguard our local laws but expect the other nations not to disreguard theirs when we talk about protecting their reefs.

Well the good news is that I did hear back from Aqualife - just need to go pick it up. The bad news is that I pulled a muscle in my back Friday night and have been out of action since. :( I'll try to reschedule.

Strawberry anenomes, green anenomes, Catalina gobies, red macroalgaes, etc. are beautiful and can be kept indoors.

I couldn't find a link but I remember seeing a website about a guy with a huge temperate reef tank. I think he lives in Washington or Oregon.

Here's a picture I took awhile back of some nice colors underwater near Monterey. http://www.usvh.com/Monterey.html

I like to think of laws as 'very' important guidelines. We must always ask ourselves, is the penalty worth the crime? I know some of you are going to flip with this point of view, but its reality. If speeding carried the penalty of 10 years in prison, do you think we would have a lot of people speeding? Because it is considered an infraction with a fine, we drive as fast as we can afford.

I am not altruistic in thinking I can keep up with all laws - let alone follow them, but I do not feel this makes me hypocritical either. On the laws I do choose to break from time to time (J-walking, speeding, rolling stops, etc.), I deserve the consequences like anyone else. So breaking our own laws does not automatically give everyone else a trump card in thinking ALL laws can be broken. If you are willing to take on the consequence, then by all means go ahead. The problem is not the laws themselves but the enforcement and penalties for breaking them is not sufficient so people disregard them.

Love the philosophical debates!!

Anybody ever been to Monterey Bay Aquarium will know right away that there are some really impressive livestock that look amazing! If the visibility was not so bad most of the time, I would probably spend more time out in the Bay diving. Loads of fun, but that whole 10' viewing, it kinda sucks when you are spoiled with Florida dive conditions.

It is attitudes like this that cause more restrictive laws to be made. I was just pointing out that we as hobbyiests expect some fisherman in indonesia to stop over collecting his reef, but its ok for us to take what we want because we are just one guy and we accept the consequences. He is also accepting the consequence and so is his neighbor and his neighbor and so on and so on-do you see the point? If everyone does it the environment is destroyed. As for those consequences Mike, have you thought about the cost to you. You own a research business that deals in aquarium animals, for you the penalty could be to lose your license and stiffer monetary fines, not to mention the siesure of the vehicle used to take the animals. IMO losing my license is not worth any blennies or catalina goby.

You can put one of these in that lobster tank. By Wrights Beach...the Dirk Diggler anemone.

Personally, I fully plan to be licensed and in accordance to all regulatory laws, because, as you pointed out, the consequences to me can be very costly and I do not to incur those consequences. All I am suggesting is that each person makes his/her own mind on what laws they choose to follow (yes it is always a choice) based on the consequences (good or ill) of those choices.

Laws and their consequences for breaking them is the system we operate in - and if the law was that important to the society that put them there in the first place, then the consequences to breaking them should be commensurable. Our legal system is one of deterrence - You do X, expect Y. If Y< than the value of doing X, then you will get more people doing X. The key to effective laws are to make Y much greater than the value of X and be able to enforce it.

BTW - picked up the system tonight. She'll need a little cleaning and some work, but very exciting just the same. Thank you Red Lobster for upgrading!

Nice Score Mike..
I was going to offer help since you hurt your back, but I guess you were just too anxious!!
Hope you didn't make your back worse while loading it or unloading it!!

Can't wait to see that baby up!!!

They said the chiller might need a new plug, LMK if you need help on that..
Did you get it for the Orig $100 I was quoted?

Yep, $100 and the good folks at Aqua Life helped with the loading. Now getting out of the back of the truck will be another issue all itself - but a lot easier to figure out while in the driveway. The unit is one piece with all equipment and weighs about a couple hundred lbs (its 100 gallons).

Thanks again Steve for the heads up. I'll do a quick VM run on the input and see if the chiller is at least attempting to switch on and draw some juice. Anything more than that and my comfort zone goes away really quickly so I might have to ask you and the fam to come over for dinner again. ;)
