Local Source of Phytoplankton

Is there anyone in the club/local area that has a 'good' culture of Phytoplankton that I could get a start from?
I am considering trying my hand at a culture and then trying to feed it to my tank and also once established trying Rotifers.

I took a couple caps DT's and added it to a 10g with about 3/4 old tank water, put a light on it, a bubbler, and some miracle grow and wah-lah! I ended up with a few pods and brine shrimp growing in it from the old tank water too.

Its not the most sterile way to do it, but It seems to be doing well, I have yet to get it dense enough to use it yet though.

Jonathan,
I thought DT's was specially formulated so that it couldn't be grown from the bottle - unless they have changed their processes - otherwise everyone would buy a single bottle and grow their own.
Also - rots (and I assume pods) eat phyto. Generally, those are things you want to keep OUT of your culture.

Gary, I believe you can get the starter plugs at www.brineshrimpdirect.com.

hmm i dont know but its green

Sunlight will keep DT's going to a dense level too. I placed just a bit of Dt's in a 2L I was using for BBS and it got dark green in about 2days sitting on a window sill. The stuff is live and seems to grow. I think you won't get the 3different algae growing, but one dominant one does seem to take over.
That has been my experience. I don't grow phyto, so take the info for what it's worth.
