local tropical reports

Saw 3 butterflies today in southampton, about a mile from the clubs collecting area. Tried to get a video of one of them but it was so small it's almost impossible to see. I'll try to get the video loaded.

The video is terrible. Forgot my weight belt, couldn't hold position for more than a couple seconds.
At 7 seconds you can barely see a little yellow flutter a couple inches below the sea urchin.

Small cluster of anemones at 12 seconds.
In past years you could see anemones almost anywhere you looked.
This year the algae is so thick you have to hunt for them.

caught a bank butterfly and a bridal burrfish today (i think it was a bridal). kept the butterfly figured ill see what happens. lots of eel grass in moriches bay for seining..

Spotted about a dozen more butterflies today and a puffer that i didn't recognize. Saw two oddball fish too. One looked like a bone fish and the other was shaped like a tang. Both were extremely skittish and took off before i had a chance to turn the camera on. Also saw a conger eel that was close to 5' long and thick as my leg. It swam underneath me into a cave in a huge rock pile. Waited, hovering for 5 minutes with camera ready but it didn't come out again. No way i was going anywhere near the cave opening. This thing could have swallowed the previous biggest one i'd seen.

Saw some large triggers today.
Also found a fish skull.
Looks like a ship from star wars.
Anyone know how to clean and preseve a skull?

Stick in on ant hill, they'll clean it up in no time ;) Then just a good wash and couple coats of shellac will do the trick for display.

Thanks for the tips guys. Ended up soaking it in straight peroxide over night. It came out spotless. Going to dry it out then hit it with some shellac.
Thanks again,
John
