Long Distance Moves

Shilo - Which part of WA are you guys moving to? I'm heading up there as well to the Seattle area specifically. This tank move is not something I'm looking forward to.

Cool ! We are going the same way ! Tacoma area...working on McChord AFB, which is only an hour and some change south of Seattle. Its only a bit over 10 hours...should be a piece of cake ! ;) lol
Our MO to NJ trip had some unexpected delays and ended up being taking 29 hours....only lost one fish !

Wait a sec... I just had an idea -

We will be stopping for the night every night since we have young kids we cant just drive strait through.

Load the rock and sand in one container which can remain dark, and the rest of the corals could be loaded in another tub or 2. I can glue my frags and such to the bottom of the container so they dont slosh and bump into eachother.

I believe the weather should be decent - but I could run a heater and powerhead on the Corals while on the road. Then at night transfer the tubs into the hotel room with me. I have a single halide that is pretty compact that I could run over the tub during the night while at the hotel. That way It gets at least 5 or 6 hours of good light everyday during the journy.

Will it work?

That does sound like a good idea. For my situation though since most of my corals are pretty matured and grown into and around most of the rocks already it would be very difficult to separate. Ah well... I might have to have a frag sale before the move

well if you could seperate them to sell them, you could seperate them to keep em too.

All my corals are still for sale but now I think I have a solution that could work with some extra work and care for the ones that do not sell. I feel a little better.

It may, but I can tell you from my experience (I moved to CA from NJ) that there is sooooooooooo much other stuff to do when you finally get to stop for the night after driving for 8 or 9 hours. The last thing you will really want to do is drap all the buckets and coolers in and setup lights, etc.
Maybe its just me being lazy, but I know what the drive entails....and we only had some falcons and two dogs, no kids.
Good luck if you do decide to risk it. Personally I would ship them before or after. Just my 2 cents though.

There is also something to be said about starting over and doing the new tank exactly how I wanted too :)

I might just end up keeping the fish and the LR and get rid of all the corals as it's not like I have anything exotic nor rare in the tank coralwise.
