Look what came today...

MIKE NY

Two Decade club
I'll be ready this year....no more power outages and waiting 3-4 hours on lines for my gas generator..

Very nice. Congratulations. Even better for the short outages for a few hours too. Makes it easier to not have to reset every clock in the house

I am truly jealous, Mike. That's one thing I really want but have had to put it off. I see you were smart enough to get LP/NG. Which way are you going to go? I decided that I'd go LP, as natural gas could be turned off depending on the situation. Are you going to have the complete auto transfer switch installed so you don't even have to be home?

Only downside to lp is if you don't already have it at your house its an added cost, but most places were good about keeping people full after Irene and sandy

thanks guys..I been wanting one for a few years now.
Larry...I'm going to use NG because it's in the house already. It comes with a 50 amp auto transfer switch and an 8 breaker box..

Mike,
Be careful, IIRC, you get less watts from the same genny on NG than you get from LP.

thanks Larry I know even with using NG Im still getting 6k which is more than enough for the average household without using anything 220

Very nice Mike.......last year I purchased a portable generator but these are much better and easier.......with mine, when I run out of gas...I'm out of luck.

I have a small 1800watt portable also which runs on gas ...it saved my tank last year which ran for a week straight, but waiting on lines 3-4 hours for gas...

I have my whole house hooked up to a 4KW portable. It's enough for the tank, fridge, TV, lights... I never found it's limit, but I also never tried using the microwave, coffee maker or toaster while on generator power. Obviously, finding gasoline was a challenge, but once I found it, I needed a lot of it, my little 2 cylinder, 4KW genny burned 1 gallon/hr. That's $100.00/day  Thank God I had it, but I do hope that before I need it again, I can step up to what you have there, Mike.
I'm pretty hung up on running mine on LP, but either way, you're right, 6KW is probably more than you'll use.
I love the fact that the Generac generators start themselves and run a monthly self check so you know that when the time comes, it's ready for you.

You would be surprised what you can run off a 30 amp 220 generator. Mine will do everything in the house but the dryer at the same time. If I turn off what I'm not using it will run at least 1 burner on the elec stove. Only down side of a permanent standby is if something does go wrong you have to fun someone to come service it

How much does something like that go for?

Not trying to self promote, but my company installs and services them. It's very comforting to know that within 15 seconds of a LIPA failure, that power is restored with the standby unit. Setup automatically, it self tests every week for 12 minutes in quiet mode. One bit of advice, you should manually transfer power every 4 months to test the power output. It does not do that on its weekly tests. Remember to change filter, oil and spark plug every 100 hours.

I personally have a 20kw with 2 150 amp transfer switches powering my whole house. I got it right before sandy - and luckly the water stopped just before my house where the unit is located. It would have sucked being 3 weeks without power.

Weekly tests are even better than what I though, I was thinking monthly.
Do you mean flip your main breaker (disconnect from the grid) and fire up your generator, manually flip the transfer switch to power your house with the genny to make sure its making power?
Couldn't you just create a "local power failure" just at your house by flipping off the main causing the genny to come on automatically?

Larry ..mine will do it automatically every month so no need to be home to manually touch anything...

From my research, that's what I thought, Mike. I was doubting my memory though, I don't have any hands on experience with them, and to be honest, I can't picture how an automatic transfer switch works. It appears that mdiack77 would know more than me, I've never been close to a set up like yours in person, I've only seen pictures and read descriptions, etc. He does the installs.
Once I hold a transfer switch in my hands and get a good look at it, I expect I can figure out what it does.
