Is it a squid or octopus? Is it good or bad for a reef tank?

I wasn't able to get a picture of him unwrapped - sorry. It looks as if there is another on in the hole that he came out of.

He is really cute and it is neat seeing him crawl around on the walls but is he reef safe? The second one has not come out yet.

Although extremely cool, I would say that no octopus can really be considered reef safe for the long term especially with various inverts in the tank.

Since it's not safe to have him in the tank, could we keep him in our 65 gallon fuge? That's where we have the one right now. We gave him some tubing to hide in.

In general, I believe that most octos are shy and like large dimly lit habitats with lots of rockwork to hide and rearrange and normally do best by themselves. I would also make sure you have a good fitting cover as they are known to be proficient escape artists.

Try feeding him some fresh raw shrimp......and keep live food in front of him all the time...or he will go exploring!

Octopus will eat any invert...is their diet!

may be a fight though...just use regular shrimp...

I can get fresh dead shrimp but I have no idea where to get live shrimp in the Philadelphia area other than brine shrimp.

I have her in the sump so she shouldn't find much to kill there.

I did learn on tonmo.com tonight that if indeed she had eggs in the rock (it's either eggs or another octopus) she doesn't have long to live unfortunately.

peel it and feed small piece and see what happens!

She still refuses to eat. I found out I can't even get dead fresh shrimp - all in this area are previously frozen. We were told by the fish market person that they haven't been able to get fresh shrimp since Katrina. We also tried some cut up scallop but she pushed that away overnight too.

If she has eggs, she will not eat.....she will care for the eggs till they hatch, then she dies....best to put here in the tank with the eggs, so she does not stress out in her final days!

We siphoned the eggs out of the tank in with her.

I've been told by people on tonmo.com to feed the baby octopus amphipods when they hatch. Can anyone tell me what this is and where I can get some?

Do you guys get in octos like that frequently? If so, I think I would like to get one. I love to eat them... but I would imagine them even neater to keep.

I do, but they are usually on the way out....or near it as they only live 2 years...lay eggs and die.....is the gulf dwarf octo...

Go to a fish market in Chinatown for live shrimp, if youre still looking.
