Looking Ahead...

Is Sailing the Seas
So now the elections are partially over we need to get a feel of what everyone as a whole wants out of the club. Im sure alot of folks out there have some really great ideas & we wont know what they are unless you tell us so, lets use this thread to toss around a few of them. The new BOD & mysself will need to try to either get together at some point to meet one another & try to get the ball rolling on things here pretty soon. I for one will do my best to keep everyone aware of wahts going on either through threads on RC & on the MTRC Website.

So if anyone has any ideas of things you would like to see MTRC as a group/club do or accomplish lets here them. I understand that we cant please everyone all the time but I do believe the majority of the club can be happy with what we do. So heres the first oppurtunity to let your voices & thoughts be heard.

Thanks,
Jason

I'd like to see trading come back in to the fold instead of so much selling. Some type of little trading event at a meeting. Not sure of the logistics, but thats the basic idea.

I'd like to bring a couple of frags and maybe come away with something I wouldn't normally seek out.

Pretty sure this is not where this should go but...

I was talking to the guy that own the Franklin Aquarium Pet Shop in Columbia, TN. He said he would be open to being approached about being a sponsor for the club. He does a 10% discount with his card and has a small area of saltwater tanks. Little out of the way for most but comes in really handy for me sometimes down and out here in the sticks.

No I can't remember his name. The phone number is 931-388-2100

I would like to see the Sustasinable aquatics trip done again, and maybe this time organize a bus to take us (that means people will pay a little) but we could do lunch and beverages and travel together.

Also maybe do an Atlanta, CHatanooga, or Pigeon Forge aquarium trip with a group rate, maybe even again with bus transportation if enough folks are interested. Usully you can get group rates.

Are you referring to Fins of Franklin?

With as much fins bashing that has gone on in this board, I'm not sure its ethical that we even pursue that :)

Franklin Aquarium, Last time I was at that place his Saltwater tank was the worst thing I ever saw! Don't think he has anything to offer to most people In this club. He does have Pond plants though, If you live In that area.

We could almost do it dirty Santa style at 1 of the meetings at someones home. I do remember lots of trading going on way back in the day when we would have meetings at Garys house. That's of good idea.

I was thinking of maybe trying to set up a schedule for maybe planned group buys. Either monthly or bi-monthly from different vendors. When we do make a larger purchase it helps with discount pricing, but also it could help closer to swap time for possible donations. We could also hit them up for club sponser ships depending on the vendor.

I am not a club member at the moment, that being said, I think a "Don't break the chain" frag sharing concept would be cool amongst club members, for those who don't know, you pass on or receive a frag or colony and then that is fragged and given away again to another person and so on and so forth. It is done in the west with great success. It would be a great way to help new members and spread the wealth with harder to find specimens. They even have a "DBTC" that they do with full blown colonies in the SF Bay Area. I think the key would be not getting selfish or do the "honor system"...you gotta give to get, and if you have nothing to give (just starting out) you gotta give before you get again.

I recall either the first or second meeting I went to (tank was still really getting started) that close to 75% of the people at the meeting brought a single frag (maybe two), and everyone traded. It was pretty cool to see.

Well when you spend big money for Tyree LE's and frags from Copps, Sniper SPS ORA and I could go on and on It's kinda hard to trade them for low end GSP Zenia and the like just trying to be honest here as there Is lots of different levels og frags out there.
Don't mind the trading but It has to be on some level playing field no? Good Idea In general just needs tweaking a little.

The concept isn't trading per say. It is giving someone a frag(not necessarily your only one of a certain kind) and they "pay it forward" by fragging that when it grows out and giving it away. When you become a giver you become a getter. As it progresses and gets bigger there is always stuff being fragged and given to someone else and everyone is in on it. And yes, it would be nice to see someone who has a colony or fraggable mini colony of "LE" or "name brand" corals and giving a frag of that away for free. I think that is one of the, for lack of a better word at the moment, problems, is someone who buys a coral frag for 200 dollars, turns around and tries to get that from their friends or club members, and this is a small club compared to other localities of comparable size, we all know each other to a certain extent. We don't all need to be Steve Tyree.

I am not saying we shouldn't sell or trade outright with each other, but to have that also going under all that would keep it fresh. And you wouldn't be losing out all together, you could make a few frags, put one in the "DBTC" and sell the rest.

And as a side note, and this is not a hit on anyone because I do have stuff with names, does the name really make the coral? I for one am not TRYING to fill my tank with names of greedy bastids that made it nearly impossible for someone to be able to afford a coral because they decided to call it "bubblegum hurricane" or "blue devil leg humper"(they do find their way into my tank occasionally because, damn, some of them sure are purty). There are plenty of newly imported corals that get out before their prices have been skyrocketed that compare in color and quality to any "LE" coral.

Also, another side note, but related to the very first part, this could be a great incentive to potential club members to join and get in on the DBTC. They might see it as an opportunity to get a cool coral they might not be able to otherwise.

Plus if you are really really into LE stuff, it would be an opportunity to get your hands on a cool piece sans currency! and that is always awesome.

+1 on the trade / pay it forward / brown bag concept. we would need a catagory system if it were brown bag so a tank would not get a coral by chance that would not survive due to low light, poor water, ect.

I would also like to see cranial extraction from the grey beards. maybee we could have a topical meeting with point counter point style on a topic like filtration, lighting, or whatever from prepared presenters. The board is a good place for advice, but i am finding i must first be knowledgable enough to ask the question correctly.

I See, That Is a fine Idea and will partake when I have grown the small frags I started my new tank with. That will leave me out for a while as all mine are 1" or less right now. I would like to comment on the Tyree/LE thing as I agree they are overpriced and silly, I do however buy what Is pleasing to my eye being a LE or not. Some of my favorite corals are In my big tank that Is Sold but the best ones are corals I'm not even sure what they are. Sometimes a frag just turns Into a Jewel after It gets healthy and you never know when you have one like that. Example I bought some frags from Crumpletop and one that was yellow In his tank has turned the nicest Blue/Turquoise and Is still changing slowly as to It's final color ??? Who knows, Plus all the others I got from him are Jewels In the rough as they are all getting healthy and changing their look! Any hoo you get the drift of what I mean.
Thanks for a good Idea Chuck Just LMK when the Copps are being traded!

I knew you would like it once I stopped stumbling over myself and got to the point. And for the record, I hold myself to my own standards, and will admit I have an ORA coral on the way, not telling what yet though cause I'm a ninja like that.

Adrian if you keep on being a ninja someone is going to go spider monkey on you before long. LOL !!

Well they better tread lightly, cause I'm all jacked up on mountain dew!

BTW, I watched Ninja Assassin last night, so now I wanna be a ninja when I grow up.
