Depends on what you want that shrimp to do. Look pretty or have a specific function. I went with a harlequin shrimp, looks awesome but ate a leg off my starfish. I now have some peppermint shrimp and a skunk cleaner. The skunk looks cool, cleans my fish, and will scavenge for detritus.

Note I do not know if the firefish or the angel nib at invertebrate might be worth looking into.

farlincharge: you do know that harlequin only eat star fish?

armisom89: I really like the cleaner shrimp but like what farlincharge said it is going to be what you want it to do.

Well peppermint shrimp are good at eating left over food that fish may not eat they are also known for eating smaller aiptasia. They are also really cheap at like $6 to $8. But in the past I have them go crazy and start eating my corals. The cleaner cost a bit more at around $20 to $30 and they will also eat leftover food but they can also be beneficial in cleaning your fish. The coral banded shrimp is a cool shrimp don't cost to much but they can get big and can catch smaller fish and eat them. The harlequin shrimp is really cool they do cost a good amount of money as well and like i said in my other post they only eat starfish so you have to buy starfish for them to eat. There are a few different kinds of pistol shrimp out there and they can pair with a goby. They are cool don't cost to much but can hide a lot. That is just some of the more common shrimp out there you can take any of them and google them and get a lot more information. I am no export but been in the hobby for a log time there are other out there but I hope this helps get you started.

if you go with the cleaner shrimp i would recommend 2 of them. A little more pricey for two but you will see a lot more of them. With two they seem to be more brave with another buddy on look out and do a lot more traveling, at least in my system. I have some peppermint a pistol/goby pair and then two skunks and i see the skunks all day and night! The others here and their! And its real cool to see the skunks clean a fish!!

I like variety, as has been stated they all have their different pros to them which is why i have both and am going to be getting 2 fire shrimp also in the future, and a pair of coral banded. I think shrimp are almost as cool as fish!!! Watching them do their thing :-) good luck with what ever you choose!!!

Coral banded shrimp( Stenopus hispidus) are predatory and known to attack other shrimp as well as worms and some snails.. The fire shrimp (lystmata debelius), skunks (lystmata amboinensis) and peppermints (lystmata wundermani) would be at risk with a coral banded .

A mix of lystmata ( pepermints, skunks and fire/blood shrimp ) work ok together ,ime.

I do know lol I bought him to munch on those tiny starfish I had a lot of but instead, he liked my sand sifting star fish. Lesson learned.
