Looking for a great digital video camcorder

While talking to a friend today telling him that I needed to get a new miniDV video camcorder as mine took a dive, he tells me I should look into the new all digital (no media) video camcorders. He tells me the quality difference is huge although so is the price. This is an area I nothing about, so I am hoping some of you gurus will at least point me in the right direction to compare a few and such.

I don't want to spend a single cent over $1K, and even that is a stretch.

Thanks,

With as many people into digital photography I can't believe there is a single soul here that has an opinion on a video camcorder!!!!

I'm nto that familiar with the products currently on the market, but you can pick up a 1080i HDV cam for around $1k these days. That's what I'd buy.

i have a JVC HDD digital camcorder with 25x optical zoom and 30gig space, think it cost about $1200 when i got it, may b cheaper now though, very good camera, i recomend it, also takes still photos. HTH

Cheers

look into the HD camcorders. Outstanding detail in every aspect of picture quality. I know sony makes one, unfortunately a little over $1K at a retail location. Sanyo also has one, but isn't quite as good as the latter. There is a good possibility you have an HDTV set right? :D You should go check it out a store near you. I placed my finger about 3 inches in front of the lens of the Sony HD cam, and WOW! I could see the dirt and dead skin between the grooves of my fingerprint. No kidding! Talk about Macro capabilities!

The JVC hardrive cams are pretty good as well, JVC is one of the pioneers in the digital video industry. Their new Hard drive cams are second and third generation now, so I would definitely give it a second thought.

I would do the JVC GZMG77US ($720-$800) cuz of its f1.2 lens and 2.2mp CCD and the larger 30gb hardrive (7hours rec time)
