Looking for a Macro lens for a D50....

I currently have the Nikon D50 w/ a VR 18-200mm lens, and was wondering what people would suggest as a best-value-for-money lens.

Thanks in advance:)

Thanks phyl, the only thing is, I am specifically looking for a close-up macro lens. My VR 18-200mm takes really good pictures as it is, and has the capability of taking nearly macro quality shots.

So anyone got some reasonable priced ideas?

Those are the available options for Macro lenses for Nikon cameras. You can get a 60mm micro (Nikon's term), a 105mm Nikkor Micro or a 105 Sigma Macro (there are other 3rd party alternatives, but I can't speak to their quality).

There is not one single lens that allows for a greater than 1:1 reproduction ratio in the Nikon line. If you want a greater than 1:1 repro ratio you'll need add-ons like close up filters, bellows, extension tubes, or Teleconverters.

You don't need to be close to your subject to product a closeup picture. You need a good macro lens. Also not mentioned in the other thread (because it blows the OPs budget) is the 200mm Nikkor micro lens. There's also a Sigma 150 that takes a nice photo from what I've seen. These two lenses still only do a 1:1 reproduction, they just allow you to shoot further back into your aquarium.

Hope that helps!

reefman,

Though I want a true macro lense, all of my shots are done with Kenko extension tubes mounted onto my telephoto lense. I'm happy with the results for the price.

If you eventually decide to get a true macro lense you can still use the extension tubes to get some great magnificiation.

I've also got a pretty awesome working distance with my set up.

Thanks Phyl. Great info. I think in that case I am going to look into the 105mm and 200mm macro. Maybe the 60 as well :D.
