Thanks I will check them out.

I have read you can make your own mated pair of percs. just buy a couple of small ones, but make sure one is noticebly larger than the other. juveniles havent made up their mind yet and can switch. the larger one will become female and the smaller the male. its a nature thing to insure enough pairs in the wild. I thid that with a couple one inch fry a few years back and they always swim together. that is until one jumped out of the back of the tank last month.

I bought one of those little quarter size Dory's a few months back at newark tropicals for 20 bucks. shes doing fine. up to about $40 size now. got it in a 30 tank with one little yellow clown goby. dory cant figure out why she cant just sit on a branch or hover mid water like the goby. everytime she tries to hang next to yellow, she sinks. drives her nuts. they are buddies.

Yeah I have been looking at those hippo tangs at newark tropicals also. That will be another fish purchase real soon. I was thinking about trying to get a mated pair by putting some baby ones in a 20 gallon tank by themselves. It would be great to put a mated pair in my 75.

as far as I know, I don't think anyone has actually bread Hippo tangs in tanks yet. takes a while for them to grow up, and then there is the correct environment to figure out. and baby food.

But percs, on the other hand have been much easier to reproduce in captivity. Sally Jo at GARF has been very successful breeding her percs by the hundreds. I believe there is lots of info on how to on the net. its probably best to give the pair a tank of their own so that they are not bothered by other tank mates. then hatch lots of brine shrimp to fed the young.

I used to have a breeding pair of bangai cardinal fish. for about two years they kept spitting out a new brood every 5-6 weeks. they are mouth brooders like mollys.

Oh I'm sorry I was talking about breeding clowns. I just want to get a hippo tang also. I am going to start setting up a tank to breed clowns pretty soon. I just need to find and read alot more info first.

You guys are on track with the perc breeding. The director of the finfish department at oceanic institute and I talked one day about breeding clowns. Apparently in the past he participated in breeding percs and said that it takes a few years to get a good mating pair. (I.e. young fish make small amounts of sperm and eggs and are generally poor parents.) So if you don't suceed right away do not fret...good brrodstock takes time!
