Looking for a recommendation

Hi, I'm having a new tank built, the specs are below. It's being drilled for closed loop(s) but I'm wondering if a turbelle might be better & easier. It's not a long tank but it's deep & tall. I'd like to eliminate dead spots & move water - I'm hoping to do this with only one Tunze on a controller due to budget. I will have only 5 or 6 fish, several SPS (probably 6 or 7, but not a TON), lots of mushrooms, hammers & several other softies.

- 46" Long, 28" Deep, 28" High
- Back left 7x7" corner overflow with dual returns on a SCWD, probably move about 1000 GPH. The overflows will be on the side & in the front
- 4" Eurobracing

I thought I could put the Turbelle on the right side of the tank, facing the two returns.

What are your thoughts? Can I get away with one since the tank isn't that long? Are there any other concerns with my setup?

Thanks!

David

Any idea on Rock or sand? Any way, I would consider 2 6000 Streams and the multicontroller, I think 2 7400/2 would also be a good choice. You could do one but it is alwyas better to get flow from both sides if possible.

Thank, I'll look into those models. Do you have any authorized dealers in Phoenix, Arizona other than Aquarium Arts? They carry your products but they said they're gone before they hit the shelves. I'd like to see some in action. I'll probably buy them online since I can't find them around here but it'd be great if I could see something before I spend several hundred bucks. :D

BTW, how do you like the Nova II's? I have a 150W on a 50G tank & I'm going to get another for the new tank. Probably a 250W. Do you have pix of your set-up?

David

I actually switched to 150w System 230+ to save energy. As for the pumps being gone before they hit the shelves in all honesty it is that way in my warehouse to, even the dealers have to wait. Tunze is a very different company comprised of 32 people making everything in house and almost completely by hand, for the whole world we can only make 250pumps a week and that is maximum output. My advice is to get on a waiting list, 7400/2 pumps are not so much of a problem I actually have two here, but the Streams are gone before they arrive.

Do you still have the Novas? I might be interested in buying one or both.

OK, the dirty details. I'm going to be using Southdown sand, about a 5" DSB which gives me about 23" of tank height to work with. I'll have a lot of LR, at least 200 lbs. The overflow is on the left hand side & I was hoping to put a Stream on the right side. The returns out of the overflow box will alternate from a SCWD (which I currently use & love) so I'll have two currents @ ~1,000 GPH alternating, both moving left to right opposite the Stream. I really only want to use ONE Turbelle, I don't want one on the same side as the overflow. In addition to these, the tank is drilled for an additional closed loop with returns in the back of the tank - I thought I'd run about 500 GPH facing the front of the tank.

Given these parameters, what would you suggest? I want to move a lot of water to eliminate dead spots, but don't want torrid currents. I really wish I could see one of these bad boys in person.

Whatcha think?

I must have talked to Kingsley for over an hour today and he will get some pumps soon, in fact he thought he might have one in stock but he said he would have to check. I think it would be fine. The 6000 is electronically variable and you can turn it down so low you almost can't feel the flow so i don't see any problems.

Thank you Roger they have the 6000 in stock, I called about an hour ago. It comes with a single controller for the same price I've seen elsewhere.

If I buy that combo, and decide later that I need another one on the other side, it looks like the controller can be expanded to control two units. What will I be missing if I buy the single controller & expand as opposed to a multi-controller? I doubt I will EVER need to run more than two streams.

Sorry for all the questions!

- edit - never mind, I saw some good explanations on the marine depot website

David

Yes the 6010 can be expanded with a branch adapter to run two pumps. The multicontroller enables two pumps to be controlled seperately, the singlecontroller they have to run at the same rate. As for my Novas I sold them sometime ago, they don't stay in stock to long and used ones are always fairly quick sellers too.

I think I'll get the combo. I could probably sell the single controller if I feel the need to upgrade. When are the newer pumps going to arrive at Aq Arts? I'd like to have a look at a few options if they stay in the store long enough.

Everyone loves the Germans. :D Or at least their products.

David

(I'm half German, hence the name, so people only like me half the time. :smokin: )

I had a burglary at my shop once and the detectives asked me what was stolen- it was a Giesemann lamp, a real surgical strike- so i told them a German light fixture and the detective said his partners was German and hence a real PITA. I don't know, German people have always seemed real friendly to me, a bit stern but friendly. Myself my family originates where Czeck republic, Germany and Poland meet so I guess depending on what year you are talking about I am German too :D

I'll head down to talk with Kingsley this weekend. Maybe I can see some of them before they're delivered to the end user. I wish he'd put on in that big display tank in the front.

The "depending on what year" thing was a LOL. Hey, we have enough ~German in us to both quote our love of beer in our profile. Man, that is one thing I love about trips to Europe, tons of great beer, everywhere!

The best beers are German or Belgian. I like Lambic, Wheat Beers and Dopplebocks most. A beer that eats like a meal. Kingsley said he was taking his kids camping so you may want to call first, he said when he was finished remodeling he would put some in display use. I run a retail shop and I can sympathize when an item is hot you don't want to take away from the customers who might want it so sometimes you have to be the last served.
