Looking for Answers from Experienced Maroon Owners

Hi everyone.

I have always loved Maroon Clowns but never had a system I was comfortable adding them into (nano reefs, or super peaceful reefs) until now. I'm thinking seriously about adding a single or pair to my system. The tank itself is a 125 gallon mixed reef with about 200 lbs of live rock. I will upgrade to a 240 gallon, 8ft long tank, but this could be as far as 2 years into the future. The inhabitants are all what I'd call semi-aggressive, minus the cleaner gobies:

1 Neon Goby (will be 4 in total)
3 female Lyretail Anthias, one changing to a male
1 male Pyle's Fairy
1 Finspot Wrasse (think mix between Halichoeres and leopard, king of the tank at all his 5")
1 Coral Beauty
1 male Bluethroat Trigger

In addition to these, I'd still like to get in a Potter's Angel, one more fairy, probably a Flame or Rhomboid, and a rabbit (thinking Gold-Spotted). I feel well-informed on the compatibility issues the last three noted above might face, so I'm asking about the Maroons. In a system of this size with this stocking list, would the clowns be suitable? I am thinking they should probably be the last added, or after the new fairy at the very least. Also, I haven't bought a new clown since my very first ocellaris back when I was a newbie. I will buy CB clowns, but I still plan to quarantine them. What do you suggest for a quarantine regimen? Anything in particular I need to treat for preventatively or should I just plop them in and observe? Lastly, from what I've read they're more likely to host an actual anemone than other clowns. Are there any particular anemones that they do well with or will anything suited to my system be acceptable?

Sorry for the somewhat long post and thanks so much for your answers and advice!

A pair of maroons would do good in your system. Gsm (gold stripe maroon) are the more popular of the maroon clowns. The natural host of gsm are bubble tips. And I never had a problem with a maroon hosting in any nem. I have a friend who's gsm pair host in a blue haddoni carpet.
From reading your post I think you are trying to see if the temperament of the gsm will fit in your tank right?
Gsm are typically more aggressive than most clowns and it is usually up to the clown really. I got a gsm pair and they are less aggressive than my other clowns. My most aggressive clowns are my Darwin's ( B&W occy) believe it or not. And I own 16 different pairs of clowns. If you get them a bta when you put them in the tank they will be fine in your tank. They will protect the area around the nem and they won't venture far from it. So put the bta in a spot where you want them to be and you should be ok.

Good information. I would also note that gold stripes are a little more accepting of one another and easier to pair.

Thank you both for your responses. The information is exactly what I was after! Now I just have to talk my LFS into ordering some in...

I had a pair of gsm clowns in my 120 for about 2 years. I never had any aggression issue unless another fish got to close to their anemone. They lived in my blue haddoni and looked great. I ended up getting rid of them when I changed tanks because they were starting to lay eggs and everytime it was time to lay they would remove all the sand from around the anemones foot. This would cause my anemone to move so the clowns were removed.

Other then that they were great.

i have a pair GSM and they can be hard on anemones.i went through a few nems,so i went with a very large carpet which works great...gl
