Hi, I am thinking about buying a tank from glasscages.com and was wondering if any one has had problems with their tanks. Feedback of any kind positive or negative would be greatly appreciated. I am thinking about either a 65 gal 36"x24"x17" or 95 gal 36"x24"x25". if you have any thoughts you can pm me

i just got a 540 from them in march. The tank is strong and holds water. There was a piece of trim on the top and none on the bottom. The silicone work is very sloppy. It was supposed to have 1 inch glass but only had 3/4. I tried to ask about it but no one there spoke english. So i took it anyway, i new what i was getting into. You get what you pay for i guess. Also the customer service wasnt great i called to find out where the overflows were placed and they told me i would find out when i picked it up. They have so many orders they feel they can be that way. This is just my personal experience, but again the tank is very strong and no leaks (so far)
 
Solid tanks, sloppy silicone work and poor or nonexistant customer service are what you will get for feedback from most people.
I am using a couple of their acrylic tanks for my sump and freshwater holding tank for topup.
In short they are cheap but they hold water.

Thanx for the info guys I've been hearing bad things about their work and customer service but no leaks so far. I am looking for a tank 36 long by 24 wide and they seem to be the only place I can find tanks with those dimensions.

You might want to wait for feedback from a few other people as well. I know of one tank here in particular and there are several in the MTRC forum.
 
My 125 wide has been kickin' for about 4 years w/o a problem. The key to working with Tom is be patient with him and document your requirements up front. He's actually pretty easy to deal with once you get past his rough exterior. He employs a lot of people from south of the border, and they're quite good with glass and also generous with the silicone. If it's a work of art you're after, look elsewhere. If you want a reliable glass box that's built like a "tank" (pardon the pun) for a good price, GC is a good bet.
 
i picked up my 240 from there. yeah, the silicone was pretty sloppy, but its thick and holds and you can't really see it when its full. it doesn't bother me anyway. its been up since january. when i was there, they were very friendly and gave me a tour of the huge facility. i had read a lot of bad but didn't experience any of it...except the sloppy silicone. they even did me a favor...
 
I really liked the tank, but as Chris said...their customer service is horrendous.

If you just expect that going in and then try to adjust your attitude so as to not make any of them mad, then you'll do great.

They are definitely worth the headache for a quality tank at an awesome price. They even loaded the tank up for me and Randy into his truck and packed it so it would be safe for the trip home.
 
It's customary to offer a bit more information than that when dissin' a business, McLovin.
 
Two reasons:

Sloppy silicone work (as stated above): Given that the main reason most people get a rimless tank is their elegance, bad silicone work is all the more noticeable. Compare their seams with ADA tanks - you get what you pay for.

Pane separation: I've read many horror stories of insufficient silicone curing times, poor craftsmanship, etc. resulting in "wet floor syndrome" from GC rimless tanks. Since it's the silicone alone holding the tank together, their is less wiggle room than with rimmed tanks.

I'd be fine with buying one of their standard tanks (for the price), but would not personally use one of their rimless tanks.
 
I saw CKreef rimless he got from them and it was Swweeet looking. The main silicone sloppiness is in the rimmed tanks I think.At least my sloppyness was from drips, ect. from the top gooing out. They tend to overdo the silicone which is a good thing in a rimless IMO. I saw no messy look to Chris's rimless at all.

On the curing note, they have a big note taped to all tanks and write on them in sharpie even not to put water in till XXX date, let cure XXX weeks for so tall tank and so on. They even told me to wait longer if I wanted since my tank was so big the first time but the stated date was the "minimum" time to wait. I bet all rimless manufacturers will get about the same amount of failure if you reaserched there tanks.

I personally think a lot of folks that use GC's tend to try to scimp on the price of things and use homemade stands and move big tanks themselves without the proper equipment resulting in seam stress and leaking. Put any tank on an unlevel stand not built to hold all the water weight and it will make any tank leak. It may be level with out the tank but the weight can put a lot of pressure on a poorley designed stand.
I feel it was our 6 guys with no glass suction cups for a good grip, pulling, pushing and cussing the tank onto its tall stand is what caused my chip in the front seam of the first tank. Trying to manuver a 7 foot tank is almost impossiable without tourqing it some without the right equipment. And wouldn't you know we woke up the next day to a good sized chip out of the front seem from the stress but the tank still holds water just fine.

At least thats my take on it all ;)
 
Oh and I showed up a few Saturdays later than I said I would with a 5 min. notice and was fully deserving and expecting a bad attitude but was treated very nice by Tom. He even went out of his way to rearrange my trailer I was carrying a 120 with stand and canopy on and gave me rope to tie the tank in good with. I showed up ropeless and bungeecordless with three wild kids for some weird blonde reason! I was expecting the worst of him but he was very nice indeed. We are all entitled to bad days and he just probably says what he really feels to people like we all want to do sometimes!
 
When I bought my tank, they told me that I had to put a 3/4" piece of foam underneath it or they would not guarantee it.

Mine did have a biga$$ date on it as well and they told me to let it finish curing.
 
Yes, you could argue that the problem with GC rimless tanks failing is an end-user problem, and you could argue that equal numbers of tanks fail from all rimless manufacturers - but if so, you'd think we'd read more about ADA rimless tanks failing....I still haven't read a single account.

I wonder if selling "unfinished" tanks has anything to do with it? I'm no engineer, but I wouldn't move or ship a rimless tank with uncured silicone. Part of the reason GC tanks are so cheap is that they don't cure them on site prior to selling and shipping them - I don't know any other manufacturer that does this.

ADA guarantees their tanks for 5 years, GC offers 90 days.
ADA uses polished, beveled edges. GC does not.
ADA has excellent silicone work, contained in the joint. GC uses fillets and the look is sloppier (no Ashley, more is not better).

Okay, I'll stop glowing about ADA rimless tanks now. We wondered OT also - the OP didn't even mention buying a rimless tank. ;)

Just wanted to point out that everyone in our club that HAS a Glass Cages tank is pleased with it.

I too have read many of their bad reviews. I don't know that I will ever own a GC tank, but can not rule it out... It must always be considered that the people that are displeased about something often voice their opinions louder than those that are pleased... Since I do not have any personal experience with GC besides helping Melly pick up her tank, I have abstained from posting thus far.

The OP asked for anyone that had experienced problems with their own tanks, not for people that had read bad reviews. I'm sure that the OP can do a search and read the negative feedback out there and make his own decision about them...

And BTW I believe McLovin was the first to bring up rimless tanks and then point out that the OP didn't even mention them???

If I buy another tank it will be a GC tank...rimless or not.

In my first post, I was just warning the OP of some issues particular to their rimless tanks in case he was considering going that route (the first post didn't say either way). I didn't intend to turn the conversation to "rimless tanks", but that happened in the subsequent posts. As a final(?) aside: If anyone in the club has a GC rimless, I'd love to see one in person, particularly one made recently since they started focusing on rimless a bit more.

I love the new adds that brook Sheilds is doing. Isn't it a German car though? Either way they are pretty fresh and funny for a comercial.

Not sure what a "fillet" they use is in the corner for the silicone is but I guess its a tool used to cut the silicone in?.. Either way I agree the end product is not as show room sweet as an ADA and the edges are kinda rouph sanded but all in all for the money its a good buy IMO.
I have said it before, if I was loaded and threw money away I would go elseware, (not a big fan of their overflows either) but alas, I am stuck in middle-class-dom. So I will keep penny pinching and cut corners that are not real important in this hobby and stick with GC's... ie: sloppy silicone ;)

Mel, You need to hurry up, get hitched and crank out some fraggs! Then you can retire that Dr. title and trade it in for "domestic engineer" ;) :lol:
