Looking for hardiness estimates on juvenile crosshatch triggers

Wondering your thoughts on how hardy juvenile crosshatch triggers are?

I picked one up end of December that was 3" in size. It had been in the store for close to a whole month and although a tiny bit skinny, it was eating fine.

The first two days the fish was very shy and had found a crevasse in the rock to hide in as he adjusted to his new surroundings. I could see him wedged in with his "trigger" extended so that he good and safe and sound in there (I could see his eyes moving around looking at things).

After that the fish seemed well adjusted, was eating everything offered, would come out to the front of the tank when someone approached because he had already associated people with food, all that good stuff.

Fast forward to today, and I can't find him anywhere. I can't tell if he has jumped, because I cannot find anything on the floor, and I can't find if he's in the tank. I've even removed some rock to get a better look inside (not all the rock though).

I'm fearing the worst at this point. It just seems odd though that I can't see anything of him, alive or dead, in or out of the tank.

He was competely fine last night - eating, out in the open, looking fine.

Could he have dropped dead at 6 weeks past importation? Are smaller ones less hardy?

Only been a few hours so I guess it's too call to be calling it a funeral but it's a hugely out of character disappearance, and if it wasn't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all sometimes, so it's hard to remain optimistic but I guess on the other hand these things do happen. :(
