Looking for macro lens for my Nikon

I'm checking the usual places, CL and fleabay... If you see a Nikkor 105mm 2.8D let me know... This is the pre-VR version that is an autofocus. Looking to spend under $400 (prefer closer to $350).

Good luck on that price. That is one piece of glass that doesn't seem to drop in price :( It wasn't the easiest lense to get last year, I was on a couple month waiting list at B&H. When it came up I was broke :(

Gresh, they discontinued this lens in 2006, how did you get one new last year? They regularily go for about $400 on fleabay, but I'd like to see what I'm getting in person. Average selling price, per their calculations is $386. Sold new for $500-600 depending on the year (built from 1993-2006.)

Yeah, I realized that you hadn't bought one, but I was curious where you were finding new, old stock. Anyway, I had thought you might be talking about the VR unit... Nice lens, but a bit overkill for tank shooting on a tripod.

Thanks for the link, that was about the best I'm finding for a VR, US market (not grey).

There are effectively 3 lens in the Nikon (Nikkor) line:

- Old non-auto focus (< $350)
- Less old, non-VR with auto focus ($350-425)
- New VR ($600 used, $725 new)

For tank shooting (from what I'm told) you don't need AF. And, you'll turn off VR on a tripod, so in theory the oldest lens should be fine. There have been some upgrades over the years to other things, like the number of blades, etc, so there are reasons to buy the newer ones as well. Any should be fine, unless you know why you need/want the features in the newer lenses.
