Hi folks Im new to this forum but Ive been checking it out for a while. Im also new to saltwater so I have many questions... Anyways Im looking for A Mag12 Pump I have a 24 which is way to big for my 65G with sump im setting up. The 24 works but will need a impeller. I will trade if interested or I have cash. Thanks

Just food for thought... A Mag7 would probably be best for a 65g. Do you have internal or external overflow? How big is the drain? Return pumps don't need to be overpowering. A 1 inch drain will drain about 650gph I think so a Mag7 at 700gph would be perfect. On my 75g I have a Little Giant 3-MDQ-SC which is rated for 650gph at 3ft head. My return also feeds an inline carbon reactor and has about 5ft of head, so maybe just rethink your pump situation... save some money! :) Goodluck. Welcome to Reef Central and to the ridiculously addictive drug (i mean hobby) of reefkeeping!!! Let us know if you have any questions!

I have an external overflow & the drain is 1 in. I didnt know how much I needed to compensate for about a 4ft head. So thanks for the advice and ll take that into consideration and go with the Mag7.

No problem. You will probably still need to add a ball valve to throttle back the flow a little so that your sump doesn't go dry. I have two Mag7 but I use them both. Have you been to Aquatic Technology yet? Greg, the owner sells alot of used things and might have a used one.

I have a 75g and running a mag12 w/ 3/4 return and 1.5" drain. Works great.

It's that extra half inch on the drain that makes a difference. 1.5" drain is rated at 1250gph I think. A 1" drain like he has is about 650gph.

Yeah I have a ball valve so Im good to go there! Aquatic Technology where is that located I dont think Ive been Ill have to check that out.

It's in Columbia Station... right on Rt. 82 It's one of the good LFS in the area. Very nice livestock and dry goods usually pretty good prices.

the only thing wrong with aquatic tech IN MY EYES is that the prices on there web site are cheaper than the ones at the store which really sucks if you go there and find out that you have to pay 20.00 more for a pump that was a good price online.

MMOORE0324 you hit the drain thing right on the head, the mag pumps have to be ran with a certain diameter pipe to get the max flow thru them. thats why JohnnyBassMans setup is working great right now but killingh the pump slowly.

That is the number one thing that I don't like about A.T. I actually hate that! And every time that I buy something from Salty I always ask like a hundred times if the internet prices are same as store prices. lol

Yeah I still need the Mag 7 I will trade you the 24 but it needs a impeller. It works but I took it apart and noticed that the fans on the top of the impeller are brittle so let me know what you think.
