Looking for new Ca reactor. Geo or Reef Octopus??

Sorry no experience here.
Definitely looking into a geo for my new 240 build, from the reviews I have read they are reliable.

Going to be watching this thread as any info can help me as we'll!

Good luck!

I own a GEO. While I have no experience with the reef octopus I can say his about the GEO. Top notch build quality. I am lucky enough to live very near GEO and have a good friendship with him. All his stuff is made by hand one at a time to ensure the best quality is being turned out. Nothing is mass produced.
Btw, they also work great... :)

I've had a Geo for a few years. (Made is the USA) They are a good quality build and have had no issues with it at all. Can't speak for the reef Oct calcium reactors. However, I do have a reef octopus skimmer and it is a great skimmer except that I had to get pump (impeller) replacement part from Europe. (Took about 1 1/2 weeks)

Every one in my club uses GEO. I also have a Geo. Great quality and support if you were to ever need it. GEO has custom built several pieces for a friend and they have never had any issues.

i had a geo 618 and then bought a MRC CR-6 (dual) with the blue line pump.

i only chose the MRC because of the second chamber and the blue line pump. (i think the blue line pump helps with feed rates and what not. i never had an issue with the effluent plugging.. but it could have been the second chamber also.. who knows)

i gave the Geo to a reefer buddy (and it is well made) he used it for a little while but then went softies so sold it off….

so i can't give you much info sorry.

I would add my voice to the crowd in favour of having the second chamber. I like the safety factor it provides.

Google DaStaCo.
We have these in Europe. They beat the pants off ANY calcium reactor out there.
They may even ship to US?.

Luc Loyen had one and I copied him and put one on my 1000G SPS system. My parameters have never shifted since using it.

The current RC TOTM also has one...

I have a Schruran Jetstream 1 on my system and Id have to say I am new to Calcium Reactors but I have it dialed in finally and although its only been a week my numbers have been pretty consistent thus far.

Yes, it holds more media, and that more media can provide extra buffering if things get out of whack and the acidity rises too much when you're away and unable to reset the reactor = safety factor.

how does a second chamber provide a safety factor? I thought it was just able to hold more media?

its like taking you're effluent line and running it through a chamber with fine media. its not just a bigger ca reactor. it takes the low PH high calcium/alk water from the reactor and runs it across the fine media and the fine media absorbs any excess CO2 which will raise the PH of the water going to the tank (less worries about having a low PH in the tank and having to run KALK to raise the PH)

thats really all it does. and by absorbing any excess PH/CO2, it will in turn add just a slightly more cal/alk water.

hope that helps a little??

Yea it really does, thanks! So do you typically run a course heavy media in one chamber and a smaller media in the second? crushed coral and sand basically?

i always used an oversized CA reactor. this allowed me to use course media (which is less sensitive to turning to mush if you have a issue with your CO2.) Reborn style media is what i used. that mixed with tropic eden media, and ZeoMag (for mag supplement, which i found to be better the dolomite)

also, this allowed me to use a higher PH in my reactor (most people have to get in the 6.5 range, but i ran a MRC CR-6 dual which is rated for over 650gal on my 240 and i kept my PH at 6.9-6.8)

then, in the second chamber, i used fine ARM media. the smaller media has a higher surface area compared to the course which means that more media can touch and interact with the effluent fluid then what a more course media would use.

hope this helps….

Did the second chamber really raise your ph? Did you ever check the PH coming out of first chamber & then ck coming out of second chamber????

Still have mixed reviews on if a second chamber really does anything to raise the PH.

Many people comment either way but no one has put a ph probe on the effluent of both to prove it.....
