Hello everyone, this is my first post so be gentle. I'm very new to the hobby, my brother in law is into the hobby and he got my wife into it, and hence she wants a saltwater tank. So i've been reading everything i can for about 3 months now. We have a 55 freshwater thats been up for over two years now. What i'm looking for is a tank/setup 90 - 120 gallon. Or some good places to buy tanks. I've been to salty critter, live in vermilion, and they only have cherry or black stands. I'ts got to be oak or it will match nothing. I'm a little anal so that would drive me crazy. Also went to neptune's cellar, but they were not heplfull at all. They couldn't tell me the price of the tanks.

You got the right place. Don't be afraid to check out the newbie forum, you will get 98% of all "stupid" questions answered w/in 5 minutes :c).

As for tanks, Salty will order a tank for you I would imagine, other than that, try the big pet store chains.

I assume you have decided if you want a reef or not. Lighting will make a $500+ difference. Also, if you are handy I would consider a protein skimmer like the ASM G series and then modify it in place of spend $700 on a nice skimmer. Feel free to PM if you want further details.

Or try craigs list or the used dry good forum here on RC.

ask TJ about the deal he just got off craigslist ;c)

Last thing.. :c). You may want to just wait for someone to sell a whole setup. you can save up to 75% $$$ that way, however, you don't really get to learn by making mistakes, maybe a good thing, maybe a bad thing.

I would say a 55 or larger system sells locally here once a month at least, and if you look on the selling forums or other local reef clubs im sure you could find a new for sale setup every week (columbus, pittsburgh, indiana etc etc.)

If you have the room, go for the 120 RR (reef ready). You will appreciate the aditional depth further down the road. Salty should be able to get you a good price on the tank. You have to be cautious on buying used tanks since you have commented that you are a little anal. All tanks get scratched at some point. A used tank is likely to have scratches of varying degees. I have bought a used tank that didn't appear to have scratches. I lit it with 400 watt bulbs and it had a lot of scratches that were visable after being lit up. I am not aware of anyone local that builds custom oak stands. I am sure someone will chime in at some point to offer you some contacts. I wish I had Norm Abrams shop behind my house since I need an oak stand and hood made too.

Good luck with your project. Don't hesitate to ask questions on here. We hate to see people make the common mistakes that end up costing you more in the long run. I have two rules of thumb to share with you.

Buy nice or buy twice - This means that products that are cheap in price, typically are built with cheap materials. The money you thought you saved on a power head will end up being spent down the road to by the higher quality power head.

Patience is key - Take your time, don't rush and buy a tank and expect to be able to put an anemonie and clown fish in it two weeks later. If you want to do this right, take your time and plan it out.

Salty Critter can get you just about any tank, stand or canopy you want in what colors that are available. He doesnt stock many. Been told if you place your order by noon on Monday he'll have it on Wednesday or Thursday.
